Start date on the country description list

Hi it's the guy who added the column. Just wondering why it was taken down. It would have helped me immensely if the correct start date was right there.

The reason is that the list is generated by my Parser, so any edits to it are overwritten each time I update it (usually after each major patch). Sadly existence cannot be parsed purely from the country history file, so there's not really any good way for my parser to figure out start dates. ~ Meneth (talk) 01:17, 2 July 2014 (CEST)
Ah, I see. Thanks for the quick response.

How to edit a bonus table

There are a few obvious mistakes in some bonus tables, but I dunno how to edit them. Help.

Add a note at Template talk:Bonus table, and me or a half-op will fix it. Oh and please sign talk page comments with four tildes (~~~~). ~ Meneth (talk) 11:24, 6 October 2014 (CEST)
I think/hope that there are no mistakes in the template. The template lists only the bonuses from ideas and policies. If they do not affect an effect (e.g. heavy ship cost) it's not possible to create a bonus table. – Lillebror (talk) 11:51, 6 October 2014 (CEST)

Relation modifiers - capitalization standards

The relation modifiers at Relations#List of modifiers were entered as they appeared in game. I knew that Project:Style stated that the name of a game mechanic is not a proper noun, but does that include the name of a game mechanic variable too? I ask because it appears that the developers are treating all these variables as proper nouns for the in-game tooltips, perhaps to remind players that the text they are reading is not merely descriptive but refers to some specific variable being tracked by the game. Vyn (talk) 22:31, 9 October 2014 (CEST)

As a general rule, something should only be capitalized fully if it is an actual name. I don't consider game mechanics to be names, thus "royal marriage" rather than "Royal Marriage".
The in-game capitalization itself isn't a good guide, as it tends to fully capitalize nearly everything, and is inconsistent. Example of inconsistency:
WAR_OVERVIEW_ENEMY_LIGHTSHIPS: "The enemy has $NUM|Y$ light ships." vs. ECOVIEW_MAINT_TP_PENALTY: "Light Ship Trade Power: $VAL$".
Inconsistencies like this are common, and I feel the best way to avoid these is to consistently not capitalize anything other than names. What is and isn't a game-mechanic should always be apparent from context, and by avoiding capitalization we avoid things like "You need 2+ Stability to enact this decision", which is more reminiscent of German capitalization standards than English. ~ Meneth (talk) 22:38, 9 October 2014 (CEST)
That seems reasonable. I will ignore the in-game tooltip's capitalization scheme then. Vyn (talk) 23:24, 9 October 2014 (CEST)

Gimme the link of the unit pip comparison graph plz

Quote: There's really simply too much info at once to be useful. A better comparison is a graph, and we've already got that.

Gimme the link of the graph plz. Thanks--kongzheng (talk) 16:25, 10 October 2014 (CEST)

There's various charts in Category:Charts, including pip charts. ~ Meneth (talk) 16:26, 10 October 2014 (CEST)

How can I edit trade node webpage

http://www.eu4wiki.com/Trade_nodes

I can't find a "edit" link on this page.--kongzheng (talk) 05:48, 13 October 2014 (CEST)

You find this edit link as usual at the top of a page on the right side. – Lillebror (talk) 06:13, 13 October 2014 (CEST)

Sidebar links

Hi Meneth,

it is possible to change the default namespace from the RecentChanges link from ‘all' to ‘(Main)'? A second point, I'm missing the SpecialPages link when I'm not logged in. Was there never a link or isn't it there since the new server? – Lillebror (talk) 11:36, 17 October 2014 (CEST)

I can't find any way to change the default namespace, sorry. Though I'd recommend enabling "Group changes by page in recent changes and watchlist" in your preferences; that'll make it a lot more compact.
The toolbox is deliberately disabled for logged out users as it isn't all that relevant to non-editors. ~ Meneth (talk) 11:41, 17 October 2014 (CEST)

"List of provinces" page is finished, plz check.

It took me about a month to add TN info in this page. Really interesting work for me.--kongzheng (talk) 04:11, 21 October 2014 (CEST)

Looks fine to me. ~ Meneth (talk) 14:17, 21 October 2014 (CEST)

Adding the capital info in country page is useful.

Because it helps wiki visitors to have quick knowledge of the province ID and continent info of capitals, they don't have to go to the list of provinces page to search for relevant info.

Am I right?--kongzheng (talk) 16:20, 21 October 2014 (CEST)

The country table is generated by a program I wrote. Thus any edits to it will be overwritten when I regenerate it once 1.8 is out. So adding info to it is pointless. I'll consider making my program add the capital, though. ~ Meneth (talk) 16:22, 21 October 2014 (CEST)
Can I have your email? So I can send my backup excel file of list to you? Hope it helps to save your time and efforts. --kongzheng (talk) 16:30, 21 October 2014 (CEST)
My program grabs the info directly from the game files, so I don't think that'd help. ~ Meneth (talk) 16:31, 21 October 2014 (CEST)

Questions about the contest and flags

I have just a few questions about the upcoming contest:

1) It mentioned that any work done between the release of Wealth of Nations and the contest end would count for tickets. However, this late towards the update should we refrain from updating pages that will just have to be re-updated? 2) Referencing above question, would we not get tickets for the above scenario; hence we should just wait until the 30th for Art of War.

And one question about updating flags: 1) When one is changing the flags;

1.What format do you want them in?
  2. What do you want the dpi to be?, or does it not matter?
  3. Where do you want them uploaded to?

Thanks,

    carterup
1) It is meant to say Art of War. Will fix.
2) Yes.
Flags: PNG. DPI doesn't matter, just resolution (and not being a blurry mess, of course). Uploaded so as to replace whatever flag is already there. E.G., one might replace File:Armenia.png with a 800x533 version. ~ Meneth (talk) 10:13, 22 October 2014 (CEST)

Template for listing positive and negative reasons that influence AI decisions

Does this wiki have an existing template for listing positive and negative reasons that influence AI decisions? I can whip up a basic template if there isn't one already. Vyn (talk) 10:43, 25 October 2014 (CEST)

Don't think so, no. What are you imagining a template like that would be like? ~ Meneth (talk) 13:17, 25 October 2014 (CEST)
Nothing fancy at this point, probably just a plain table for now in fact. If icons are to be added at some point for common factors however (e.g. for attitudes, trust, opinion, etc.), it may be prudent to just put everything in a template to begin with. On the other hand, templates can sacrifice a bit of transparency and dissuade editors from making casual changes, so it could be equally reasonable to delay their implementation. Now that I think about it, I'm starting to get a bit lazy, so perhaps I'll hold off on using a template for now. Vyn (talk) 20:08, 25 October 2014 (CEST)
The biggest question is, what advantage would a template give over just using wiki-tables? Templates are extremely useful for reducing the amount of writing that's needed, but it doesn't look like it'd cause much of a reduction in this case. ~ Meneth (talk) 20:10, 25 October 2014 (CEST)
It's the counting of the colspan and rowspan, as well as repetitive use of icons that can be annoying. I'll think about putting up a template if it really starts bothering me. Vyn (talk) 20:28, 25 October 2014 (CEST)

Edits to Japan Page

Meneth,

I'm sorry I had to undo your revision to the Hosokawa guide section, but I could not undo the previous revision without undoing it first. I would appreciate it if you would let me undo both again to restore the guide to a better condition. -- Anonymous

Discuss it on the article's talk page, please. BTW, that's not how the undo mechanic works (it's a bit weird and hard to understand; I wish Mediawiki would make it easier to use). ~ Meneth (talk) 23:24, 25 October 2014 (CEST)

Region map

Do we have a region map somewhere on the wiki for Regions? Perhaps one in the style of Media:Continent_map.png? I ask because it might be helpful in understanding certain mission requirements. For example, Castile/Spain has missions that grant colonial enthusiasm for discovering the Caribbean or Spanish Main, but only when they are undiscovered and within colonial range. Thus by the time a player could see these regions in game, they would already fail to meet the mission requirements, making it important to have some prior meta knowledge. Regions also affect some other things such as the wants your provinces opinion modifier, so a region map could be a useful addition to the wiki I think. Vyn (talk) 02:50, 28 October 2014 (CET)

No. Noticed this lack, too. I don't know if it is possible to create a worldmap of regions at all, because the regions overlap, partially several times. Should one create maps for every single regions instead? – Lillebror (talk) 07:38, 28 October 2014 (CET)
What Lillebror said. I'm not sure to what extent a region map would really be doable. ~ Meneth (talk) 11:49, 28 October 2014 (CET)

Shouldn't Generic Ideas countries have their own page?

Hi Meneth, Since AOW introduces a LOT OF countries with unique NIs and many new NI groups, there will be probably less Generics than Unique countries. Thus I think a page with a list of all Generic Ideas countries could be very useful both for modding and development purposes.

Dozens of new countries are added in AOW, usually with very exotic - sounding names, and it is now much less obvious which of them have unique NIs and which have boring GIs.

Also as I said, one big list of remaining Generic countries could be very useful for any modder wishing to give them unique NIs, or for users wishing to ask Paradox to put these 100 Generics into 8 - 10 big NI groups.

Anyway, I think it could be really useful. If you think it would be too much work - I can create one big 'all GI nations' page on my own.

What do you think about that?

It is possible that the regional pages like Italian peninsula will get merged to some extent as more countries become unique. Currently, those pages only list countries with either generic or group ideas, so if that continues to be the criteria, then you'll be able to use those pages to find generic countries. ~ Meneth (talk) 17:17, 29 October 2014 (CET)

Format help

I have no idea what is going on with the formatting on Culture could you give it a look? my wiki-fu is rusty :/ Christopholes (talk) 22:28, 30 October 2014 (CET)

What happened is that you added further columns to the table rather than redistributing what's on each row. I've fixed it now so there's consistently 5 groups per row. ~ Meneth (talk) 22:32, 30 October 2014 (CET)
Thank you. They've added so many new culture groups and I'm going to try and get that section 1.8 version before I crash. Christopholes (talk) 22:33, 30 October 2014 (CET)
Nice work so far. Leave a comment here when you're done and I'll give you some tickets. ~ Meneth (talk) 22:34, 30 October 2014 (CET)
It is done, still needs format help but all the new cultures/culture groups are there :) Christopholes (talk) 23:43, 30 October 2014 (CET)
I've cleaned up the formatting and given you four tickets. Thanks for adding all the new cultures and groups! ~ Meneth (talk) 23:54, 30 October 2014 (CET)

Trade goods

Should I get rid of all outdated info or move the put outdated to a new page? Christopholes (talk) 00:25, 31 October 2014 (CET)

Anything that's completely obsolete (E.G., supply/demand) should be removed. Anything that's only somewhat wrong should be kept until it can be updated, as long as it isn't actively misleading. ~ Meneth (talk) 10:29, 31 October 2014 (CET)

really hope I can join the Oct. 2014 EU4wiki contest

I am still in my 1.73 EU4 Takeda campaign which will take me about 1-2 months to finish. As soon as I finish my 1.73 campaign, I will choose a trade-focused nation and start a 1.8 AOW campaign. Hope I can help in 1.8 EU4 wiki editing.--kongzheng (talk) 06:57, 31 October 2014 (CET)

The contest ends on the 15th of November, so as long as you can edit before then you're in the running. Any help after that is appreciated still, but won't put you in the contest. ~ Meneth (talk) 10:30, 31 October 2014 (CET)

Achievements page

Hi! While playing, your wiki has helped me a lot and when I saw the contest I realized this is a wiki and I can actually do something to help, so that's what I intend to be doing. I recently added the new "Art of War" achievements to the achievements page and added a disambiguation about Marches, linking it to the Buildings site and the Vassals site, since I linked one of the achievement description to it. Not sure if info on Marches should be contained on the Vassals page or on a page of its own though. EU4 is one of my favorite games, so I hope I can contribute. I'm a bit of a noob when it comes to wiki editing, but being a cs student helps hopefully haha. Anyway, hope I can get some tickets for my contribution so far. Thanks! Frankenwolf (talk) 12:00, 31 October 2014 (CET)

Nice work so far. I've given you five tickets for the edits and uploads you've done. ~ Meneth (talk) 13:59, 31 October 2014 (CET)

How to make new country pages?

I wanted to make some new separate pages for some of the countries that are currently classified as generic but now have unique NI's with 1.8 (Ajuuraan etc.) but I am not sure how I could go about starting this (is there a 'new page' option anywhere). Also are there any templates available to help create them and how would I add in the flags for them. Thanks, DarthRacerF1.

Search for the country in question (or click on a link to it on the country list or similar). If that redirects you, then click the link at the top of the page you arrived at (it'll say "redirected from <country>". That'll take you to the actual page, which you can then edit as you see fit. You can then copy the templates from another country page and fill it out with the correct info. The national ideas you can simply copy from the national ideas page. Oh and sign talk page comments with four tildes (~~~~) ~ Meneth (talk) 15:57, 31 October 2014 (CET)

Strategy Guide and Raffle Tickets

Hello. I have added a strategy guide into the Theodoro page here on the wiki, and I only received one raffle ticket, when the "Earning Tickets" description states doing something such as creating a strategy guide is usually two or more. I don't know if you missed that, but if you could explain, thanks.

It was pretty short, and Theodoro already had the beginnings of a guide. ~ Meneth (talk) 00:06, 3 November 2014 (CET)

Spelling mistakes

Fixed some spelling mistakes on the Sweden is not overpowered! strategy article, and the rules state to post about it here. Oops, forgot to sign the above...TheWinner (talk) 19:45, 4 November 2014 (CET)

Anyways, quick question: Would you rather any events pages be updated like the Swedish ones, or like your parser ones? I'm partial towards the parser- less work :p TheWinner (talk) 19:45, 4 November 2014 (CET)
The good way to do it is to first run my parser so you've got a starting point, then templatify that. Reduces the work massively compared to doing it manually, while still ending up with a fancy-looking end result. ~ Meneth (talk) 19:48, 4 November 2014 (CET)
Yeah, that's what I went with, much thanks. Soo, two other questions...: 1. How does one update bonus tables? { {bonus table|global settler increase} } is out of date, was updating the colonization page and noticed it's a bit out of date. 2. Is there another page to ask fairly random and short questions such as these? Rather not bother 1 specific person when I've a question.TheWinner (talk) 23:33, 4 November 2014 (CET)
You'd probably have to update it manually. Evil has a parser of some sort, but I'm not sure how well that works. You could come on IRC and ask him about it, I suppose.
For questions you could ask on IRC, ask here, or ask on the relevant talk page. It's my job to deal with this stuff though, so no need to feel bad about bothering me. ~ Meneth (talk) 23:43, 4 November 2014 (CET)
What exactly is out of date in the {{bonus table}} for ‘global settler increase’? I check it several times now and cannot find what should be wrong. – Lillebror (talk) 08:06, 5 November 2014 (CET)
Oops, seems like I didn't check into things too much. I was using Notepad++ to search multiple files, and counted the instances that "growth" appears, then compared them to the template. "garrison_growth" also shows up though, which I didn't realize. Oh well, still useful info, thanks anyways. TheWinner (talk) 18:37, 5 November 2014 (CET)

Fixed a good few spelling mistakes on the Milan strategy page as well as translating some names to English+neatened up a few things TheWinner (talk) 15:40, 11 November 2014 (CET)

General comment on the Wiki

Hi Meneth, thanks for all the work you do on the wiki. I would just like to say, however, that I feel it is a pity that this wiki is full of lists and dime-a-dozen strategy guides while pages covering core gameplay mechanics go neglected. It's naturally your decision to make and of course you can't just change the conditions of the running contest but if you have another contest I would strongly encourage you to give tickets only for core content and not for transient information that is of no use whatsoever to experienced players.

Also, please consider revealing the location of your super-secret IRC server, as I dislike Webchats. Mgoetze (talk) 04:12, 3 November 2014 (CET)

Perhaps. Will have to see what the next patch focuses on. There are plenty of tickets to be earned by editing core content though, but I imagine it might be easier to earn the same tickets earning less important stuff. I've tried to focus most of the ticket generation on getting stuff updated though, which seems to have succeeded nicely.
The webchat location is listed in the webchat instructions. ~ Meneth (talk) 10:12, 3 November 2014 (CET)

Strategy guides can be pretty useful to new players. EU4 is a rather intimidating game for those not familiar with strategy games in general, let alone Paradox's unique line of grand strategy games. I crossed over to EU4 from CK2 myself, and I still had to watch several videos and read many guides before I could get my bearings right in game. Simple guides that just showed players how to analyze a country's situation and develop a plan for survival and expansion were all very helpful to me in that phase. It would certainly have taken me much longer to discover core strategies like vassal feeding if I was just playing in isolation. In any case, most mechanics that operate in a straightforward manner have already been documented on the wiki. Although there are still many important ones left out, they tend to be rather abstruse and difficult to test. I encourage you to tackle that challenge! Vyn (talk) 11:38, 3 November 2014 (CET)

Hi Vyn, I'm not saying of course there should be no strategy guides or advice at all - after all I wrote a strategy section for the Rebellion page. ;) But I'm not a fan at all of the country-specific ones that say "do this, then do this, then do this" ... they don't teach you how to analyze what you should be doing on your own, and they are very easily outdated by a new patch. Watching a video/stream on YouTube/Twitch or reading an up-to-date AAR on the forum is much more effective, and I feel the Wiki would do well to concentrate on what it does best. Mgoetze (talk) 18:34, 3 November 2014 (CET)

Added some DLC info

I added info about the two unit packs released on the same day as the Art of War expansion. Roaringjohn (talk) 19:07, 4 November 2014 (CET)

Nice. I've given you a ticket. ~ Meneth (talk) 19:10, 4 November 2014 (CET)

Changes made

Hi there. I made a few tweaks to articles, mostly grammar stuff, though. I don't want to look like a moneygrabber but I'd certainly appreciate the chance to win something :P I'll try to do some more tweeks tomorrow.

Cheers.

section version

Can we get an indicator, that a section of an articel is accurate for the current version? Currently there is only an indicator if a section isn't accurate for the current version.

If you look at the land units page, there is the big warning at the top, that the article is outdated. But the unit pips are actually accurate, but people don't realize that.

If there were a way to have that show only if the article itself is marked as outdated, sure. But having that show when *everything* is up to date would be distracting. ~ Meneth (talk) 07:18, 4 December 2014 (CET)

Localisation

How can I export localisation? I tried it but no success.

I'm not sure what you mean, sorry. BTW, sign talk page comments with four tildes (~~~~). ~ Meneth (talk) 17:33, 26 February 2015 (CET)

Question on achievements article for 1.10

Hi Meneth,

Firstly, thanks for putting up with me, and secondly, thanks for correcting my errors. I've got just one quick question – the achievements for 1.10 have not yet been classified for difficulty in achievements.txt; how should they be added to the achievements page, then? Mapleyy (talk) 19:04, 26 February 2015 (CET)

Wiki users can classify them. If you're unsure what category an achievement fits in, just stick it in "unrated" or something like that. ~ Meneth (talk) 19:09, 26 February 2015 (CET)
Got it, thanks. Mapleyy (talk) 19:19, 26 February 2015 (CET)

Sub-saharan Nations

On the Sub-Saharan nations page, a few of the ones mentioned under notable are relinked to the Sub-saharan countries page and aren't mentioned in the table beneath. So basically they don't have any descriptions. Now it's impossible to create the page, because it already exists, but simply redirects to the Sub-Saharan countries page. I'd be willing to create a the pages for them.

Sign talk-page comments with four tildes (~~~~).
When you get redirected, the top of the page will have a link to the redirect page. Go there, and you'll be able to edit the page. ~ Meneth (talk) 15:53, 27 February 2015 (CET)

Missions and is_playing_historical_setup "allow" in 1.10

One of the new "allow" conditions in 1.10 is "is_playing_historical_setup", which, of course, checks if the player is playing a historical setup before the mission can be displayed; should this be included in the mission information? Mapleyy (talk) 02:59, 28 February 2015 (CET)

Not sure that's really necessary since it is generally pretty common sense whether a mission will be available or not when the world is randomized. ~ Meneth (talk) 13:59, 28 February 2015 (CET)

Contest Ticket Issue

Hello. I was supposed to recieve 2 tickets for writing a strategy guide on Westphalia, but I only received 1 ticket. --Curbon7 (talk) 00:24, 1 March 2015 (CET)

Westphalia was not on the list of countries that need a strategy guide, due to not existing in 1444. Additionally, the guide wasn't especially detailed. 1 ticket therefore seemed appropriate. ~ Meneth (talk) 00:32, 1 March 2015 (CET)

Some achievement guides/edits.

Hail,

I added 'Je maintiendrai' and 'Blockader' achievement guides (and update the achievements page to link to it). It might be best to ignore the many edits that I required to bring the new pages up to something more in line with the style guide than the first attempt and just consider the end result.

Also updated 'Turn the Table' achievement with alternative guide.

Kind Regards, Rygel8472

I'll look through it soon. ~ Meneth (talk) 19:23, 1 March 2015 (CET)

Questions about the competition

Hi, was wondering something after looking at people's submissions: Do we need to verify the information, or just compare it to 1.10's patch notes or something? ie. should we assume the values haven't changed through the patches if it isn't explicitly stated? --TheWinner (talk) 15:41, 3 March 2015 (CET)

The information should be verified in some way. Mapleyy uses GitHub to see which files have changed, for example. "Stealth" changes are pretty common. ~ Meneth (talk) 15:43, 3 March 2015 (CET)
Hi, I suppose you're referring to what I've been doing? I've been comparing game files with old ones (git repo), and one's I've verified the changes, I'll sprint through the article sections (for example, in Religions and denominations, Government, Land units, etc.). In the case of articles such as Navy and Manpower, the bonus table template has already been updated for 1.10, so the only thing that needs to be done is that the other stuff (body text/info/stats) is verified in-game, and I'll sprint through the sections in that case too. In the case of country articles, the national idea tables have been verified, so the only thing that really needs to be checked are the other properties such as religion and capital location/name/province ID, and to check that the strategy guide can plausibly work for 1.10 (and that the mechanics discussed still behave the same.) Mapleyy (talk) 15:49, 3 March 2015 (CET)
Oh, quicker than what I've been doing it seems. Just wanted to get you disqualified and win make sure the wiki wasn't being badly verified. Thanks anyways --TheWinner (talk) 16:00, 3 March 2015 (CET)
I do do occasional common sense checks, you know ;). Though Mapleyy could certainly be a bit better about writing a justification when he verifies something, though so could you. ~ Meneth (talk) 16:07, 3 March 2015 (CET)
Well, honestly, I'm trying to win and to do that I'm trying to minimize the effort/time and maximize the results. I was going back and forth a lot at first; it's a lot easier to do things in "bulk". Mapleyy (talk) 16:09, 3 March 2015 (CET)
What's certain is that one of you two will win. With so few outdated pages, I don't see how anyone could beat both of you at this point. Plus the odds are very high that both of you will win something in the raffle.
I might calculate those odds if I get bored. ~ Meneth (talk) 16:13, 3 March 2015 (CET)

Total war

Hi,

Just wondering, have you noticed the deletion tag on Total war? It was apparently added there in December, not sure if you've seen it, as nothing seems to have changed since then. Mapleyy (talk) 02:25, 4 March 2015 (CET)

Well, I've seen it now. Page deleted, thanks. ~ Meneth (talk) 09:22, 4 March 2015 (CET)

Update to version 1.10

It is easy to change the version without check if it is really updated!! I already find some of this error!! For example: [1]. But in in 1.9 Arabia can no longer form Egypt, so it is NOT "still the same in 1.10". Stigni (talk) 11:09, 5 March 2015 (CET)

The same in Bukhara or update Land Warfare and there isn't Siege Ability (it is introduced in 1.6 patch). I don't want to know how he get 200 ticket. Stigni (talk) 11:42, 5 March 2015 (CET)
Fine, I'll take a look through the country articles to verify the ideas and decisions again. Mapleyy (talk) 13:49, 5 March 2015 (CET)
He got a lot of tickets by doing a lot of good work. That a small minority of that wasn't quite up to par isn't a significant issue.
Of course, he won't be getting any tickets for simply correcting his own mistakes, but making some mistakes is human. As far as I can tell, the vast majority of his updates are correct.
I'll give you a couple of tickets for pointing out those mistakes when I next process edits though. ~ Meneth (talk) 15:43, 5 March 2015 (CET)
FYI, I've went through all the country pages and made 13 corrections. Mapleyy (talk) 16:10, 5 March 2015 (CET)

Question on flags

How close do flags have to be to the in-game ones to be considered acceptable? Just as an example, Armenia's deviates somewhat... just wondering, since some of these (e.g. Aztec) shouldn't be hard to put together if that's the case. Mapleyy (talk) 05:32, 6 March 2015 (CET)

Well, it should at the very least clearly be the same motif. Though I'm not sure I consider that Armenian flag an improvement; if one looks at the thumbnails the old one looks a bit better. So I'm gonna go ahead and revert that one.
So I think a good rule of thumb is that in thumbnail form it has to look at least as good as the old flag. I hope that helps. ~ Meneth (talk) 08:43, 6 March 2015 (CET)
Oh, I was looking at if the country had a page, and if it looked nice on that... Guess I'll keep the thumbnail rule in mind though --TheWinner (talk) 10:11, 6 March 2015 (CET)

Question

Hi, why'd I get deducted tickets for not providing examples of the conditions? That column was just added by Certh while I was editing the page, so I kind of felt I needed to put it in there, (though I don't really think it's needed for most of them). Doesn't mention examples anywhere on the tickets page either. Basically, I would've gotten more tickets for less work if I left the examples column out of my edit, it looks like --TheWinner (talk) 14:47, 6 March 2015 (CET)

My mistake; I thought "example" was included in my description of the task. However, it turns out I also misread it as 2 conditions rather than 4. (It's now reduced to 2 since there's no longer a handy list to refer to)
So your ticket number should be about right anyway. ~ Meneth (talk) 15:09, 6 March 2015 (CET)

Wiki contest question and a suggestion

Sweden national idea name.png

Hi, I am a new editor to this wiki, and just when I had created my first content, I noticed the wiki contest. It seemed like I would sort of automatically get my tickets, but I would just like to let you know that I haven't got them yet - it seems like you have to grant them manually, so of course I understand and respect that you also have other matters to attend to, but I am just letting you know. My contributions can be found at this page.
Futhermore, I have a suggestion. I do not really know where to post it, but I suspect this is a good place as any. I think it would be a good idea to have the name of the nation ideas at each country page - it can sometimes be hard to find out if the nation have unique ideas, or which national idea group they are part of. It seems logical that France has French ideas and Spain has Spanish ideas, but it is not always that easy to check that.
This do of course require some work, I wouldn't matter going through all the nations and fill out the name of the national idea group, but this will require a new cell in the country-table template. I do not know how to do that (or even if I have permission to do it), so I would like to hear if you could do it, if you approve my suggestion. --Chrras (talk) 23:26, 7 March 2015 (CET)

My apologies for being slow to give out tickets the last few days. I've come down with a cold, so I haven't had the energy to go through edits.
I'll process all unprocessed edits once I'm feeling better.
It'd be doable to make the "name" parameter of the template override it being named "ideas and traditions" if set, which could then be used for any nation without completely unique ideas. I'll try to remember to think about whether that'd be a good idea. ~ Meneth (talk) 00:26, 8 March 2015 (CET)
You do not have to apology, it is totally understandable.
Regarding the national ideas and traditions I am glad that you'll consider it. I think it would be a good idea. Currently, you have to browse the National ideas page whenever you need the information, and that page is extremely long and it can be quite hard to find the information that you're actually looking for. If you want to find out which national idea group a specific country has, you'll have to look in the list, and some of them is depending on culture, other on locations or tech-group. I was thinking just to add another cell in the table under the flag, as shown in the picture to the right. Another idea could be to make the header, currently saying "Ideas and traditions", say for instance "Swedish ideas and traditions" or "Andean ideas and traditions" --Chrras (talk) 01:12, 8 March 2015 (CET)
Group and unique idea boxes differ in the fact, that the boxes of group ideas begin with a note about the requirements of the group. For unique ideas - I don’t see a problem, but to display the name of group ideas should be self-evident. (I prefer your thoughts Meneth instead of expanding the {{Country}} template.) – Lillebror (talk) 09:54, 8 March 2015 (CET)
I know this isn't a huge change at all, just a little flavour making it more clear if this country has unique national ideas, group national ideas (and which group) etc. I know you can look it up in the National ideas page, and if the country is part of a nation idea group, it is most likely also stated in the box at the country-page.
With the expanded country-template, if you just are looking through the country-pages for a country to play, which I know at least some people do, the information would already be there and furthermore clearer and easier to understand. But yeah, I understand your thoughts, and maybe this wasn't as good a suggestion as it sounded in my head --Chrras (talk) 10:56, 8 March 2015 (CET)
Your idea is good. It is an improvement.
A name alone says nothing. France has French ideas, Spain has Spanish ideas and Ceylon has Ceylonese ideas - no, Ceylon’s unique ideas are called “Sinhalese Ideas”. Italy uses Italian ideas - true, but which of the two?
As on country pages the idea group template is set just below the country template I do not really know what speaks against the naming to write in there. – Lillebror (talk) 13:56, 8 March 2015 (CET)
I made changes on the {{Idea group}} template as it was my thoughts. For the result see as example: Mainz. – Lillebror (talk) 11:35, 9 March 2015 (CET)
That looks good, thanks. It is going to take some work to get it to all country pages, but I am of course willing to help ;) --Chrras (talk) 12:23, 9 March 2015 (CET)
No. I have changed the {{Idea group}} template, so that the change is on all pages off countries with group national ideas. It was not my intention to change the pages of countries with unique ideas - for a better differentiation of these two country groups (with or without unique national ideas), which you've demanded. – Lillebror (talk) 12:52, 9 March 2015 (CET)
(If you want the ideas name in the infobox header for all countries, we have do edit all pages of countries with unique ideas. Then I would however suggest that one add a line "National ideas" to the country template, but which do not contain the name of the ideas but rather the values ‘unique’, ‘group’ or ‘generic’.) – Lillebror (talk) 13:31, 9 March 2015 (CET)

(Unindent) Looks good. I agree with Lillebror that there isn't much point to specifically marking unique ideas as unique. Simply marking non-unique ideas should be good enough. ~ Meneth (talk) 14:38, 9 March 2015 (CET)

I think I misunderstood you Lillebror. Are all the non-unique ideas automatically marked now, or do we still have to fill out the name in the templates?
Non-unique ideas are automatically marked now. – Lillebror (talk) 17:47, 9 March 2015 (CET)
Great! :) --Chrras (talk) 20:27, 9 March 2015 (CET)

Contest HoI3

Hi Meneth. I was one of the winners of HoI3 in the contest, and I just set up my email so you could please send me the cd key. Sorry for being a few days late. Thanks. --Curbon7 (talk) 11:49, 18 March 2015 (CET)

Will send it to you this afternoon. ~ Meneth (talk) 12:42, 18 March 2015 (CET)

Random Page Bug

Hi Meneth. The random page link on the sidebar takes you only to Genoa. It's been like that for about a week. --Curbon7 (talk) 02:01, 22 March 2015 (CET)

Thanks for alerting me of this. Turns out the new search engine (installed 3 days ago) also overrode how Special:Random works, and somehow broke it. I've turned off it affecting Special:Random, so it now works once more. ~ Meneth (talk) 02:13, 22 March 2015 (CET)

Icon template

I have implemented your suggestion on my talk page to split the {{icon}} template based on the first letter of the identifier in my sandbox. Please take a look at, Meneth. For testing I have copied the technology page provided with the split template to my sandbox. – Lillebror (talk) 13:06, 29 March 2015 (CEST)

Seems to have reduced rendering times to a third (from ~15s to ~5.25s). Great work.
I'm not quite understanding what you're doing here: "{{User:Lillebror/sandbox/icon/a|{{lc:{{{1}}}}}|w{{#if:{{{2|}}}||NULL}}={{{2}}}}}". ~ Meneth (talk) 13:10, 29 March 2015 (CEST)
Oh. I think you are asking for the w parameter.
The call of the template should not be changed. I simply want to pass the optional second parameter to the subtemplate. But "{{User:Lillebror/sandbox/icon/a|{{lc:{{{1}}}}}|{{{2}}}}}" did not work in all possible cases. I tried several terms till I found this “construction” on a wiki help page. If the second parameter exists and is defined w gets this value assigned. In the other cases the parameter is called wNULL, which has no function in the subtemplate.
Do you or someone else know an easier solution? – Lillebror (talk) 13:57, 29 March 2015 (CEST)
{{#if:{{{2|}}}|w={{{2}}}|}}, perhaps? That way the "w" parameter will only be defined if actually set. ~ Meneth (talk) 14:01, 29 March 2015 (CEST)

Strategy guide navbox

Do we have any plans for a navbox like the EU3 one? Split into continents and enabling quick links through the wiki to other national guides? Dauth (talk) 21:17, 14 May 2015 (CEST)

No plans, but I'd be happy to hear any ideas you've got for such a setup. ~ Meneth (talk) 21:18, 14 May 2015 (CEST)
Given the huge number of countries we have a few options. Firstly I think it might be worth only placing a country onto the template once the guide is Class A, I'd like your thoughts on this.
Option 1) Like the EU3 one, all countries in a table, however this can become over large especially with the ideas on the right panel too
Option 2) EU3 style but in continental blocks with links to the other continents available, see below for general idea
Western Europe

Western Europe: Austria • France • Navarra • etc

Continents: Eastern Europe  • Asia  • Africa  • etc

Eastern Europe would link to the Eastern Europe navbox or section on Countries so people can get to other guides easily. To improve accessibility I think you should be able to get anywhere in the wiki using just the mouse. Dauth (talk) 21:31, 14 May 2015 (CEST)
The first idea is definitely a no-go; too many countries for that.
The second idea could probably work though. Not sure there'd be much point to linking the other continents though; might as well just link the countries page, no? ~ Meneth (talk) 23:17, 14 May 2015 (CEST)
Linking to continents goes back to my point about being able to get anywhere using just the mouse. It will be one or two lines for each template, not a huge amount in the scale of the number of countries in Western Europe. I'll try to put something together later today. You never answered on requiring high quality guides before putting them in the template. Dauth (talk) 09:11, 15 May 2015 (CEST)
As countries should have a unique strategy, I see not necessarily the need of a navigation box. But if …
At the moment we have 80 countries with strategy pages. I would prefer a navbox with collapsible content like at wikipedia (perhaps multiple times), example Felinae. With a division by continents and culture groups.
Secondly, I would like to have a style that corresponds to the Infoboxes. Perhaps approximately so:
– Lillebror (talk) 09:58, 15 May 2015 (CEST)
I think that'd be overstyled. Better to keep things simple:
~ Meneth (talk) 11:45, 15 May 2015 (CEST)
I'm with Meneth, less is more in this case, this will be a big box even if closed.
I think there is something to be said for pre-collapsed boxes but I'm not sure I'm a fan of them. (Q1) Is there a way to have some boxes open on certain pages? For the France guide I'd want the Western Europe sub-box open with the Eastern Eur and Asia sub-boxes closed but for Ming Asia would be open and both European ones closed?
(Q2) Should we have a minimum content limit before pages are put into the boxes? I know when I was reading the EU3 wiki, finding small strategy guides was always an irritant. Dauth (talk) 12:31, 15 May 2015 (CEST)
A1: It'd have to be a parameter for the template (though technically it could also be hardcoded into the template, but parameter makes more sense). E.G., {{country guides|Western Europe}}.
A2: I think if we are to do this, we should only include pages that have been rated B or higher, yeah. (B isn't especially hard to reach, but does exclude tiny guides) ~ Meneth (talk) 12:34, 15 May 2015 (CEST)
