The Knights Hospitaller are an ancient order. Arising from a group of nurses and doctors, to care for the sick, around the turn of the millennium this holy order turned to its Knights to throw back the Turkish threat. Things have not been going well for this most sacred of Crusaders. Controlling only the island city of Rhodes the Knights must contend with the Heathens and the aloof Venetians. Things are not going to be easy for you. Starting with one province you must deftly rebuild your power base throughout the Mediterranean and convert the heretical Christians back to the one true faith. The Barbary Pirates will be eyeing your gold and the Ottomans will be keen to destroy the thorn in their side. Find allies and find them quickly for the Knights of Rhodes will have some dark days ahead.

Decision

The Knights can form Flag of Jerusalem Jerusalem if they own and core Jerusalem, Nablus and Gaza and remain Catholic. Unlike all other countries, Knights and Cyprus will remain in control of Jerusalem instead of releasing it as a vassal. They will also lose the benefits of Theocratic government and their National ideas, and will instead become a Feudal Monarchy and gain Jerusalem's national ideas. One should carefully consider these effects before enacting the decision. In particular, the loss of -2 unrest and 3 Tolerance of Heretics from Hospitaller traditions and ideas, and 2 Tolerance of the True Faith from Theocracy can result in an unexpectedly sharp increase in rebellions.

Rejoice! Holy Jerusalem is again in Christian hands - our Christian hands. The Pope has informed us that if we were to reestablish The Kingdom of Jerusalem, our salvation would be assured.

Events

Main article: Knights' events

The Knights can get an event that has them capture the brother of the Ottoman sultan (even if not involved in a war), a choice is given between several European nations to ransom him to.

Strategy

The Knights Hospitaller start in one of the most difficult positions possible. They begin with 3 starting regiments and 1 transport ship. Catholicism as the state religion, but their only province (Rhodes) is Orthodox. Their main culture is Maltese, so with some luck Malta can defect to them. Also Rhodes is Greek, making this culture accepted but beware of Greek patriots.

Their starting position doesn't allow for much options though as the only provinces you can make a claim on from Rhodes are Mentese and Tekke for the Ottomans or Cyprus, which is guaranteed by the Mamluks. Thankfully, Venice is a historical friend (they are guaranteeing the Knights and will even ally them with some opinion increase) and they have the strongest navy in the Mediterranean sea in the early game, making you safe from Ottoman or Mamluk wars.

Early strategy

The most secure strategy will obviously be to find allies early on: not many choices there though. The best one is obviously Venice, but you can also ally Poland with a +2 reputation diplomat and improved relations, Genoa (not the best choice), or even Aragon. You have Venice as an ally and multiple choices are ahead of you, most of them involving DOWing a minors around the Mediterranean (Ragusa, Urbino if they are not allied to Aragon, Serbia, etc). Keep in mind that neither Ragusa nor Urbino could be cored before the diplomatic technology 7 though, it would be best to vassalize them early. These 2 DOWs would get you MASSIVE aggressive expansion though, so actually your best expansion would be towards Byzantium which will give you not only a lot less AE, but also a more stable start. When you DOW them (Venice will follow you in the war), they will probably be allied to Serbia, from which you can get Zeta and Kosovo for example (Kosovo now produces gold) and even vassalize them as well. From Byzantium it would be best to take Achaea and Athens and vassalize the rest (given that the Ottomans are not at war with them). Maximize your reputation with Hungary so that they don't join a coalition against you. Once you get 4-5 provinces from this war, build up your navy (at least 5 or 6 cogs to drop on Cyprus later on) and try to ally someone else. At this point France or Austria would maybe be available, depending of the rivals they picked.

Expansion options

At this point you will already be able to jump to Italy and from there (by taking Urbino if they're still available) even join the HRE. Another trickier strategy would be to form Jerusalem but that requires some luck and a rush towards the Mamluks. Venice takes the mission to conquest Cyprus at day one in most of the games, so just wait for them to lose the mission and the claim on the island (by 1471 it should be done). You can then take Cyprus easily if Venice follows you, the Mamluk fleet is gonna be crushed by Venice's and you'll be free to take Cyprus. Once you've got Cyprus, make claims on Nablus and Gaza, wait for the Mamluks to be at war with the Ottomans, and try to take the 3 provinces needed to reform the kingdom of Jerusalem (Nablus, Gaza, and Jerusalem).

Be prepared, that after forming Kingdom of Jerusalem, all your European provinces will be considered as "Distant overseas" which can severly hurt your income and army/naval force limit.
