Global expansion in newly discovered areas and the establishment of colonies is transforming Spain into one of the most powerful and wealthiest nations of our time. Spanish explorers are constantly moving into new territories and extending our borders. Immense amounts of gold and silver are being brought back to our motherland, filling the coffers of our state Treasury.

Missions

Main article: Spanish missions

Spain's missions focus on completing the Reconquista and expanding into the New World.

Events

Main article: Spanish events

Spanish Civil War

If Spain is in a regency before 1500, then there is a chance that a civil war will be generated. Spain will have to choose between supporting the advisor Álvaro de Luna, and thereby face a noble rebellion that might be backed by neighboring Aragon or Navarra, or accept the demands to end unwanted noble influences and face a loss of stability.

Italian Ambition

If both Spain and France own provinces in Italy between 1490 and 1590. They are able to claim each other's lands, reflecting the Italian Wars that consumed the attention of these two rivals in this period. This event type will lead to worsened relations between the nations and a greater likelihood of war.

Minor events

The Expulsion of the Moors was central in the development of the Spanish state and the culmination of the Reconquista, so Spain will have events that reflect those expulsions. The Spanish State Bankruptcy events have returned, but only as flavor events if Spain actually goes bankrupt.

Strategy

Main article: Castile#Strategy

Spain is far easier to form as Castile than any other nation, since it is the most powerful nation on the Iberian peninsula. The most effective strategy will be the same as for Castile. As Spain, the player has the option of becoming a major colonial and naval power. Another possibility is to expand into Europe's mainland, battling France and/or overthrow Austria to become Emperor. Reaching the American Continent before other European powers may give the player a significant advantage, especially if a large navy is created. Usually, it is most beneficial to maintain good relations with Portugal as both nations share the same trade node and have the common enemy of France. Although, if the player wishes to conquer Portugal, this is usually easiest in the early game, before colonial expansion takes place. If Portugal can be annexed before the colonial expansion happened, Spain is for a long time the only nation that can expand to America, since other nations won't usually take Exploration ideas first.
