Events

Msg event.pngJohann Sebastian Bach

Bach was a composer of the Baroque era and the most celebrated member of a large family of northern German musicians. Although he was admired by his contemporaries primarily as an outstanding harpsichordist, organist and expert on organ building, Bach is now generally regarded as one of the greatest composers of all time.

Strategy

Saxony begins the game in 1444 as an elector of the Holy Roman Empire, leading a personal union with Thuringia. Saxony is a challenging nation to play, with the potential to form Prussia, Germany or become leader of a united Holy Roman Empire.

At the beginning of the game, the biggest problem Saxony faces is difficulty expanding. Due to the awkward location of their two provinces, and the location of other nations capitals, they can only create claims on Anhalt, Bohemia and Wurzburg. This lack of casus belli will be annoying for most of the game. A good idea is to diplo-annex Anhalt as soon as possible so the player is free to expand into the German lands they may need especially before the web of alliances lock up the HRE. Ally with the strong HRE allies (Austria, for example) and perhaps a few other electors, so they stay away from any coalition that forms against the player. It is perfectly fine to go over the capacity for diplomatic relations. Even though there is a decrease in diplomacy points gain per month, most diplomatic technology is worthless to Saxony, since it is focused on trade and ships.

When deciding where to expand, focus on nations needed to form Germany, HRE electors, or the richest, largest countries that are vassalizable. If Bohemia is not allied with any large nations, Saxony can go to war with them just to vassalize any small HRE allies they have- though they must have strong allies and be powerful enough already. Taking Bohemia's two Saxon provinces is another possibility, however this may destroy Saxony's reputation and have the Emperor and neighbours declare war. The player should have sufficiently strong allies to combat this, but it could cripple any chances of being the Emperor any time soon.

Once the player has a few additional provinces, an option is to expand towards the Teutonic Order (or what remains of them). Since they are outside the Empire, grabbing the Prussian provinces provide a good boost of power. Saxony can also decide to try reform into Prussia, but there are both pros and cons to doing so. Saxony has excellent ideas and traditions focused heavily on diplomacy while Prussia's traditions are purely military. The formation of Prussia requires the player to be either Protestant or Reformed. Switching religions requires some planning beforehand, otherwise the process could take nearly 50 years to complete. In addition the Holy Roman Emperor is usually Catholic, meaning the player needs to decide if it's worth the risk.

For National Ideas, Diplomatic is a good first pick, since Saxony will be constantly diplo-annexing countries. Military ideas are also a decent since the player usually will have leftover military monarch power. If the player is considering switching religions, taking the Religious national idea second can quickly convert Saxon lands. If religious ideas are chosen, only go four ideas deep since the rest of the religious tree is not worth it.
