Template:Idea group/generic North America and South America (or the New World) are the two continents that consist of native American tribes and are the closest lands for European colonisation (apart from Africa). It is uncolonised in 1444, but there are many native states, of which most are tribal. Several of the larger native tribes in North America, and a few in eastern South America, possess their own unique national ideas, while the smaller tribes share the same national ideas as each other. Central America is divided between a number of tribes and kingdoms, with the historical winners, the Aztecs, just beginning their rise to prominence. In the Andes, Cusco - the forerunner to the Inca Empire - is just one among many small states. All native states are in inferior technology groups and must westernize to have any chance of fighting the European settlers.

When Old World nations settle the New, their colonies will become semi-autonomous colonial nations. These nations are dynamically generated, and don't have fixed cultures, technology groups, or flags. They share a common idea set. Colonial nations that achieve independence can change their name and flag to reflect their independence, with the available country names depending on the region in which their capital is located. A number of these nations exist in late-game starts; the USA, independent from 1776, is the first to appear.
