Flag of Nevers Nevers is a two province minor Duchy located in the Europe. In the year 1444, Nevers starts out with two exclaves. One of these exclaves is the capital of Nevers, which is surrounded by the nations of Flag of Burgundy Burgundy and Flag of France France. The second and last exclave is the province of Rethel which is surround by Flag of Burgundy Burgundy, Flag of France France, Flag of Liege Liege and Flag of Provence Provence. In addition to Nevers complicated location, Nevers starts out as a Vassal.png vassal of Burgundy.

Opening Moves

in 1444, Nevers starts out as a vassal of Burgundy, as a country split into two parts, and no real army to speak of. To survive, the player will have to move quickly before Burgundy has a chance to annex it. Before the player unpauses the game, it is recommended to check Burgundy's rivals, normally it will be three out of Flag of Austria Austria, Flag of Castile Castile, Flag of Aragon Aragon, Flag of England England, France or Flag of Denmark Denmark. It's a good idea to get whichever three are rivals to support the player's independence, and it may be worth fabricating a claim on Bourgogne. If France is Burgundy's rival, the player may need to improve relations beforehand, as they will most likely have an opinion malus with the player due to them desiring the player's provinces. Once all three countries supporting the player's independence (two is bearable, but riskier), declare war before any of the supporters gets dragged into another war.

When the war starts, it is a good idea to let the player's allies do most of the fighting- if France is supporting independence, one could just move their armies into their land so they don't lose precious manpower. Typically from this war the player would want to take either Bourgogne or Charolais, otherwise it will be impossible to add the player's capital to the empire without moving it, which will waste valuable admin points that are necessary to core provinces. If the Burgundian Inheritance happens during the war, the player should probably restart, as all the land around the player will suddenly become a lot harder to get. The war should be relatively easy to win, just be wary that if France is in the war, they typically wont transfer control of provinces to the player, so the player should make sure their armies are the leaders in siege of any province the player wants to take. An ideal peace for this war would be to take Bourgogne, making them cancel one of their PUs to make them far easier to fight in the future, and to take as many ducats as possible along with independence. If France helped the player and the player wants to keep them as an ally, then it's probably worth giving them a province they have a claim on in the peace to help keep relations high.

Solidifying Nevers' position

Once the player has made peace with Burgundy, they should be prepared to lose an alliance with one of the countries who helped them get independence, but this shouldn't be too much of an issue now. One should then core whatever provinces have been taken from burgundy, and add their country to the HRE- this will give far more options for expansion and protection from the major powers around the player. A good next move could be to take Barrois from Flag of Provence Provence, Flag of The Papal State The Papal State and Flag of Savoy Savoy will normally help the player with this. So long as the player is careful with their aggressive expansion, they should find themself in a very stable position- from here they can go on to conquer more of Burgundy, expand into the HRE, challenge the Emperor for its position, and as a Burgundian country, Nevers can also form Flag of France France if the required provinces are taken from them, or with the rich provinces in the low countries, the player can easily culture shift and form the Flag of Netherlands Netherlands.
