With revolutionary ideas spreading across Europe, and following decades of high taxation and poor harvests, the widespread dissatisfaction at [Root.Monarch.GetTitle] [Root.Monarch.GetName]'s absolutist rule can no longer be ignored. The [Root.Monarch.GetTitle] has been forced to reconvene the Estates General, a feat unseen for over a century, to have the deputees devise a reform program that will lead to a way forward for [Root.GetName]. However, compromise between the various factions will no doubt prove difficult, and already the divisions between the old order and radical groups are threatening to explode into conflict!

On 5th May 1789 the General Estates met at Versailles. The different sections of the French society were somewhat divided on issues and couldn't agree. Only farmers wanted a social reform, while both noblemen and bourgeois could accept a partial social reform. However, that both financial and constitutional reform was needed was beyond doubt to all members. At first the king tried counteracting initiatives to produce a constitutional and social reform, but on 11th July he had to face facts and issued the popular minister of finance, Necker, to create a good proposal for financial reform. Unfortunately the farmers and petty bourgeois were held outside the negotiation as Necker believed them to crave impossible social concessions. While refining the final Constitution and signing the Financial reform, the effects of the government's denial to subside the bread prices was seen on the streets of Paris. The king ordered in troops, but the soldiers refused to shoot at th...

Not everyone is happy with the course the Revolution has taken. Reactionaries are everywhere, ever seeking an opportunity to restore the monarchy. This has brought the militantly radical faction led by a certain Robespierre to power in the National Assembly. They are agitating for a campaign to root out the 'enemy within' through mass arrests of 'thought-to-be' royalist sympathizers and the liberal application of Madame Guillotine.

The Reign of Terror has seen countless Frenchmen massacred in the name of the Republic. No sooner has one threat been eliminated then the next is identified and purged. Recently, [Root.Monarch.GetTitle] Robespierre held a particularly violent speech, in which he denounced and demanded the arrest of traitors in the Committees of Public Safety and General Security. This has caused widespread fear and outrage among the leaders of the Revolution, who fear yet another purge of their ranks. Already the National Assembly is moving to demand his arrest and curb the worst excesses of his Reign of Terror, returning stability to the realm and ensuring that no one may use the chaos as an excuse to restore the monarchy. However, it seems that Robespierre still has many supporters who will surely seek to protect him if we do not move swiftly.

After the failed flight of the royal family on June 20, 1791 the king was forced into house-arrest. When the Reign of Terror started the nobility was beheaded en-masse and the king was declared to have conspired with foreign powers and thus considered a traitor. The king was first forced to abdicate, imprisoned and called 'Citizen Capet.' On January 15, 1793 the National Convent voted for a proposal to execute the king with the figures 361 votes against 360. On January 21, 1793 King Louis was beheaded.

Born in Corsica on 15th August 1769, Napoleon Bonaparte undertook military education at the royal military college of Brienne (graduated in 1785). A young artillery lieutenant when the French revolution erupted, he grabbed his first opportunity at the siege of Toulon in 1793 and then become the youngest general in the French revolutionary armies. A military genius, his victories in Italy in 1796 (and again 1800) and his campaign in Egypt 1798 would sharpen his thirst for power and he would become consul, then Emperor, marking the dawn of a new age.

The 'Plot of the Rue Saint-Nicaise' was an assassination attempt on the life of Napoleon Bonaparte, First Consul of France, in Paris on 24 December 1800. The attempt was carried out by seven royalists who had connections to the earlier Chouan Revolt. A bomb hidden in a barrel loaded on a parked cart exploded just as Napoleon and his escort were passing by on the way to the Opéra to see the opening of Joseph Haydn's oratorio 'Die Schöpfung.' The bomb, nicknamed the 'Infernal Machine', was filled with gunpowder, flammable materials and bullets, and set off by using a long fuse. The explosion killed several bystanders but failed to hurt Napoleon.

As the French revolution dragged on and saw permanent turmoil and the outburst of war, the people of the western provinces of France (Poitou, Vendee, Brittany) came to regret overthrowing the old regime and its relative stability, if not liberty. The unwise move of the Republican government to suppress the old clergy and replace the Catholic cult, combined with the return of some Royalist nobles, were the sparks that ignited a terrible revolt in 1794 that would force the diversion of large number of troops and mass massacres.

As First Consul of France, Napoleon Bonaparte faced several plots and assassination attempts carried out by Jacobins and royalists, often sponsored by members of the Bourbon dynasty - the former rulers of the country. Thinking it would be more difficult to carry out a Bourbon restoration if the Bonaparte succession was secured in the constitution, Napoleon decided to re-create the hereditary monarchy in France and had himself crowned emperor by Pope Pius VII on 2 December 1804 at Notre-Dame.

In 1809 Austria had been crushed and also Prussia was occupied. France was at war with England, but had managed to vassalize Spain. Russia was her ally and everything looked perfect until 1812, The Russians did not fulfill their obligations when come to the Continental Blockade and they had become wary of French power. In June France invaded Russia with more than a half million men. The Russians made a slow retreat to even the odds as the French army was shrinking from attrition. The Battle of Borodino (September 5-7) started as a bloody struggle, but thanks to luck and a diversion attack by Marshal Ney, the Russian Army was annihilated. Napoleon though decided to hold his Grand Armee, spreading it out for winter. Supply lines where secured and a lesser task force called L'Armee Baltique moved up occupying the Baltic coast up to St Petersburg which it took by assault. When late spring came, Napoleon again had more than half a million men in Russia and was advancing. During the winter Napoleon had restructured Poland under Poniatowski and recreated the Kingdom of Ukraine under Chielmkowski easing the supply effort. On 30 June 1813 Russia surrendered, unwilling to let Moscow perish in flames. France was the master of Europe...
