Waitaha is a one-province Maori chiefdom in the South Island of New Zealand. By conquering the North Island it is able to form Aotearoa. It has no land neighbours as the only iwi in the South Island, however it shares Cook Strait crossing with Ngati Toa.

Strategy[edit | edit source]

Uniting New Zealand as quickly as possible to form Aotearoa is likely to be a priority when playing as Waitaha, as European nations will begin colonising Oceania relatively soon after beginning to colonise the Americas, and be extremely difficult to evict. This is especially pressing for Waitaha, as their starting province directly borders two uncolonised provinces that colonisers may use as a stepping stone to invade the rest of New Zealand, starting with Waitaha. Waitaha starts with only 4 development, lower than all North Island iwi. Their position in the South Island poses an additional challenge in expansion, forcing strait crossings to reach their northern enemies. However, the strait also provides a great defensive barrier, and if Ngati Toa can be secured as an early ally this could be very advantageous. Waitaha must beware the natives in its neighbouring uncolonised provinces, as they can pose a serious threat to its armies in the early game if they are moving through them for any reason. Rather than directly colonising them, the mission Colonize Southern Island will cede the uncolonised South Island provinces immediately upon completion; due to Waitaha's low starting tech and small size colonisation is very time consuming and costly and so this is a massive advantage if it can be secured. The kingdom government rank can be achieved without forming Aotearoa through the Centralize the Realm mission; however, irrespective of whether the player chooses to form Aotearoa the same strategies will be relevant for Waitaha once it has united New Zealand.
