Merged template: Group idea[edit source]

As per the discussion on the national ideas talk page, I went ahead and merged the individual idea group subtemplates into one Group idea template. I still prefer to have them listed on the National ideas page and transcluded from there though. I'm not sure if this is what you had in mind for the merged template so let me know if anything needs changing. Haven't made any other changes yet. If everything is ok, I'll start replacing all the NIs on the region and country pages after the region pages are all done. ~ SolSys (talk) 00:36, 3 January 2016 (CET)

Looks good. The main reason to prefer templates over section transclusion is that templates are native to MediaWiki, and thus almost certainly better optimized than the section transclusions are. ~ Meneth (talk) 00:48, 3 January 2016 (CET)
Do we have some velocity problem for page like National ideas? Stigni (talk) 11:07, 3 January 2016 (CET)
We don't have any pressing performance issues, if that's what you mean. Preferable to avoid them before they happen though. ~ Meneth (talk) 12:05, 3 January 2016 (CET)
Yes, it is what I mean. Just think about it before do an edit like this. Stigni (talk) 14:17, 3 January 2016 (CET)
I don't think it will be a problem. The only place they are [and plan to be] used is on the regions and country pages [as far as I'm aware of]. I do have some future plans, but hopefully it won't be an issue. ~ SolSys (talk) 12:25, 3 January 2016 (CET)

Formation Decision[edit source]

I thought that it could be useful to have all (Re)Formation decision in one page, and have a transclusion them in each single country page; so it could more easy to update and the user could see all country decisions all together. For that I start insert all decision in my sandbox. What do you think? Stigni (talk) 11:13, 5 January 2016 (CET)

I'm not certain we need this, the reason that we want to use transclusions is to prevent duplication and missed updates. Now all of the formation decisions can be trascluded (I set that up yesterday) the remaining advantage is in updating the pages. However we've already got methods for knowing if something needs updating in the inbuilt sversion tags. There is an argument to be made for a (re)formations page but I'm not convinced by it yet. Dauth (talk) 11:26, 5 January 2016 (CET)
Dauth's argument seems pretty solid. Got any further arguments, Stigni? ~ Meneth (talk) 12:35, 5 January 2016 (CET)
The main reason I can think of for this page [updating aside] is that many nations can form some nations, so it would be easier to transclude them from a single source instead of a different page for each formation. Maybe combine it with the current Formable countries page. ~ SolSys (talk) 13:34, 5 January 2016 (CET)
We have a page with all the decision and for example Cultural Shift that is transclusion in Culture or Institute the Societas Jesu that is transclusion in Portugal/Spain. So for the sake of completeness we don't remove this two decision from Decisions page. With the same idea we need to create a page with all (or spitted by superregion) formation decision; also because the custom nation could form new nation and have in one page the list of the requirements and of the effects it could be very usefull to decide the culture of the CN. Stigni (talk) 16:13, 5 January 2016 (CET)
At the moment the decision is on the country page of the nation build which is formed. I think this is a good choice. All infoboxes have a versioning. It's not necessary to update them at once. I don't see an advantage in a collection of all formation decisions on a page.
Referring to the previous section of this talk page I could think to put all decisions/events/missions which are used on several pages (transcluded) in (sub)templates, e.g. for the formation of Egypt: {{decision/Form Egypt}}. (With only collapse as optional parameter.) – Lillebror (talk) 18:59, 5 January 2016 (CET)

Template:Country protection option[edit source]

Template:Country is protected with the "cascading" option turned on, so it protect all pages that are transcluded in it. This include Template:National ideas/defg. So we can not edit it. Stigni (talk) 08:49, 8 January 2016 (CET)

As 'halfop' you are allowed to edit it. – Lillebror (talk) 09:26, 8 January 2016 (CET)
But I can't: "You do not have permission to edit this page". Stigni (talk) 09:55, 8 January 2016 (CET)
Idk why you couldn't edit it. (Edit: You are right.) I think it's a good idea that these pages could be edited by more users, so I removed the cascading protection of the country template. – Lillebror (talk) 10:44, 8 January 2016 (CET)
Fine by me. Admins (halfop+) only should be plenty. ~ Meneth (talk) 11:45, 8 January 2016 (CET)

Labelled section transclusion[edit source]

I just added a section to Decisions#Tribal so I could add the "Reform the Government" decision to Timurids. So why doesn't transcluding it work? Here's a test:

It works in my sandbox so I have no idea what I'm doing wrong. Hairy Dude (talk) 03:20, 11 January 2016 (CET)

Everything. ;-D
A labelled section transclusion doesn't work inside template parameter, in your case of the {{box wrapper}} template. You have to substitute the template. – Lillebror (talk) 07:16, 11 January 2016 (CET)
Heh. Thanks. Hairy Dude (talk) 17:50, 11 January 2016 (CET)
Perhaps you could make a version of {{box wrapper}} that is transclusion-friendly? Call them {{template|box wrapper begin}} and {{template|box wrapper end}}, for example. That way the contents won't be inside a template. Would that work? Hairy Dude (talk) 17:52, 11 January 2016 (CET)
If you have to change the box wrapper to the code you can simply substitute it with {{subst:Box wrapper}}. Stigni (talk) 18:25, 11 January 2016 (CET)
It would make things more fluid and more standardized for sure [especially shortened {{template|bw_s}} and {{template|bw_e}}]. I just feel silly when {{template|bw_e}} is actually only </div>. ~ SolSys (talk) 18:32, 11 January 2016 (CET)
Good idea, Hairy Dude.
I have changed the template for an additional alternative syntax: {{box wrapper}} boxes {{end box wrapper}}. The original syntax is still valid: {{box wrapper| boxes }}. – Lillebror (talk) 20:03, 11 January 2016 (CET)
But a substitution of the box wrapper template produces now a long code because of the #if clause. I undo my changes. Perhaps its better to create two alternative template. (In this case I prefer a not abbreviated name.) – Lillebror (talk) 20:18, 11 January 2016 (CET)
You just need a safesubst token in there. I've reverted your revert, and added it. Substituting will now resolve the #if, making it nice and small. ~ Meneth (talk) 20:21, 11 January 2016 (CET)

Rebels template[edit source]

I made a template for rebel factions at User:Hairy Dude/Rebels. Some examples at my sandbox. What do you think? It would only be used on Rebellion but I think it would improve the presentation (and make it easier to automate writing them up). Hairy Dude (talk) 16:06, 13 February 2016 (CET)

Looks decent. Feel free to roll it out. ~ Meneth (talk) 19:46, 13 February 2016 (CET)

New country pages[edit source]

Sorry to bother you Meneth, but I'm unsure of how exactly to create a country page. Lots of countries don't have specific pages and I haven't found out how to do it. — Preceding unsigned comment added by TheProCoder (Talk) 18:14, 5 April 2016 (CEST)

You search for the name of the country. If that redirects you, click on the link of the top of the page. If it doesn't, there should be a red link allowing you to create the page. ~ Meneth (talk) 18:28, 5 April 2016 (CEST)

Deleting pages[edit source]

Meneth how do I delete a page? Made the With a little help... page and then realised that the achievement was called With a little help.. (with only 2 dots) so I made the correct page but now there is a dud. I've deleted everything on that page and linked the correct one to the achievement but can't figure out how to delete the page. — Preceding unsigned comment added by TheProCoder (Talk) 06:14, 7 April 2016 (CEST)

Its better to redirect the broken pages to the real one, you won't be the only person who makes a mistake. Only half-ops or above can delete pages on the wikis. Dauth (talk) 09:53, 7 April 2016 (CEST)

Updated Flags - Raster or Vector?[edit source]

I'm planning to go through the flag list and improve the flags to either a 900x600 .png raster image, or a .svg vector image. I'll end up having both files in the process regardless. Which format would the wiki prefer?

- Charlesex 00:19, 7 April 2016 (CDT)
The wiki should support both however we use the flags in several other templates which may not have been set up for svg so png is likely to be easier for us. Dauth (talk) 09:53, 7 April 2016 (CEST)

Also, is it possible to get 1.5-2 tickets for each flag? I've been redrawing the flags manually, and it's been taking over an hour per flag. Seeing that they're clear and in good resolution, bumping the value makes it more worthwhile for me. - Charlesex 04:03, 9 April 2016 (CDT)

Ticket counts are largely based around utility for the wikis, not the amount of effort involved. Higher resolution flags is only marginally useful for the wiki, and thus the reward is low.
There are no plans to increase it, sorry. ~ Meneth (talk) 11:34, 9 April 2016 (CEST)

I've been uploading higher-resolution flags and noticed while looking at other high-resolution uploads (such as for Hejaz) that the copyright was using the "C-PD-self" template. Should I go through and update the copyright on the ones I uploaded using that copyright? Thought I'd ask before doing so. I'm new at this. Philadelphus (talk) 00:32, 18 April 2016 (CEST)

I think legally speaking, just sticking with the same copyright as before probably makes the most sense. ~ Meneth (talk) 10:01, 18 April 2016 (CEST)
Ah ok, thanks. Philadelphus (talk) 11:43, 18 April 2016 (CEST)

New Province Map[edit source]

Hi Meneth, was wondering if you will be uploading an updated province map for Mare Nostrum as you did for Cossacks? Zraith (talk) 06:57, 7 April 2016 (CEST)

I probably will. ~ Meneth (talk) 12:18, 7 April 2016 (CEST)
Do you have an idea on when it might be? I'm not familiar with the rules in preparing, I think I saw it someplace saying that the outlines are to the bottom and right of the province, otherwise I might try a hand it as it's the lynch pin/bottleneck for me to be able to do all the other maps that I did last round. Zraith (talk) 13:51, 7 April 2016 (CEST)
If you've got Photoshop, you could use my Photoshop Action to do it: forum:629840. ~ Meneth (talk) 13:59, 7 April 2016 (CEST)
I don't have Photoshop. I use and/or Inkscape for most things. Zraith (talk) 14:12, 7 April 2016 (CEST)
I've uploaded a new version then: File:Province_outline.png. ~ Meneth (talk) 14:22, 7 April 2016 (CEST)
Thank you! Zraith (talk) 21:17, 7 April 2016 (CEST)

A question[edit source]

Hello, how to create an image with borders like this? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 123e55 (Talk) 19:24, 8 April 2016 (CEST)

You use the File:Province outline.png on top of a map screenshot (F10 in-game). ~ Meneth (talk) 19:39, 8 April 2016 (CEST)
Can you be more exact , please / xD — Preceding unsigned comment added by 123e55 (Talk) 15:44, 9 April 2016 (CEST)
If that's not enough, I'm afraid I don't have the time to explain it. ~ Meneth (talk) 21:18, 9 April 2016 (CEST)

Talk Pages[edit source]

In the past, I've been updating the talk pages on articles I edit with a summary of what I have changed. Should I stop this and only edit a talk Page when I have related questions?, For example, if I need more information on certain back-end game mechancics related to the page, but don't know where to find them?

Also, on pages tagged with "Rewrite", should I remove the rewrite commentary on the talk page once I feel it's complete, or simply leave commentary as I have done in the past?

Cragspyder (talk) 21:12, 8 April 2016 (CEST)

Usually, it is possible to sum up what you've done in the actual edit summary. In those cases, you should do so.
Only if you've changed too much to reasonably sum it up there is there much need to edit the talk page.
It is mostly meant for when people are unsure about how it'd be best to do something, or the facts of the matter.
You should remove the rewrite tag when you feel it is done, yes. Make sure to use the word "rewrite" in your edit summary when you do so, so that it is easily spotted. ~ Meneth (talk) 21:16, 8 April 2016 (CEST)
Sorry, I have already been removing the Rewrite tag itself from the main article once complete; What I meant was, should I remove the list of Rewrite requirements (on the talk page) as well?. Cragspyder (talk) 21:21, 8 April 2016 (CEST)
I don't think that's needed, no. Maybe add strikethrough and comment that you've addressed the complaints. ~ Meneth (talk) 21:28, 8 April 2016 (CEST)

Checking Earned tickets[edit source]

Hi Meneth I was just wondering if there was a way to check what we have earned our tickets for. Just a bit curious. — Preceding unsigned comment added by TheProCoder (Talk) 07:44, 9 April 2016 (CEST)

There's no breakdown of which tickets were assigned for what, no, sorry. ~ Meneth (talk) 21:18, 9 April 2016 (CEST)

Username typo in contest contributions[edit source]

Hi, there's a letter missing in my username in the contest's Earned Tickets table: it's currently Tr3qwerty instead of Tre3qwerty --Tre3qwerty (talk) 22:17, 12 April 2016 (CEST)

Fixed. Sorry about that. ~ Meneth (talk) 22:18, 12 April 2016 (CEST)

Contest question[edit source]

Is a user that wins a discount voucher able to win the rest of the prizes? ( for example will rygel be able to win one game of ck2/hoi3/victoria2? 123e55 (talk) 14:06, 13 April 2016 (CEST)

They are, yes. The only restriction on winnings is that you can only win once prize in each category. So you could in theory win a voucher, a copy of CKII, a copy of HoI3, **and** a copy of Vic2. But winning two copies of CKII would be impossible. ~ Meneth (talk) 14:20, 13 April 2016 (CEST)
And one more question: when you say "Some of the flags are low resolution and high resolution ones are desired" what is the resolution desired? 900x600? And how to change the resolution without losing quality? I'm trying to change resolution in photoshop but still can't do it as perfect as this: 123e55 (talk) 14:37, 13 April 2016 (CEST)
800 to 1000 pixels wide. 2/3 of that tall.
If it was that easy to do, it wouldn't be a contest task ;)
Usually it's a matter of either doing a cleanup after upscaling, preserving geometric shapes, or tracing it and cleaning it up. ~ Meneth (talk) 14:58, 13 April 2016 (CEST)
Okay I tried everything and my best so far is this I don't think it is good enough. Thanks anyway for your help! 123e55 (talk) 15:38, 13 April 2016 (CEST)
Yeah, that isn't good enough.
No problem. ~ Meneth (talk) 15:40, 13 April 2016 (CEST)

Gentle Reminder of Tickets[edit source]

I rewrote the Malacca page on the 8th as it is on the list of pages to be written. I cannot remember offhand if I was assigned tickets for it; I believe I might have had 30 at the time. However, the Malacca page remains in the list to be rewritten so this may be an oversight or perhaps tickets may not have been assigned.

Since the 8th, I also rewrote Pagarruyung (on the 9th) and The Sun Never Sets on the Indian Empire (on the 10th). Pagarruyung was already written previously by Rygel8472, which I neglected to notice until I was finished, though I do still make some additions such as the achievements sections. Sun Never Sets remains on the rewrite list as well so I would appreciate a brief review to determine whether or not tickets have been assigned for these pages. Thanks again.

Cragspyder (talk) 23:05, 13 April 2016 (CEST)

You'll have to talk to Dauth about Malacca; he assigned the tickets that day.
You were assigned 7 tickets on the 9th, most from the Pagarruyung page.
I somehow missed your edits on the 10th. That's now been rectified. My apologies for the inconvenience. ~ Meneth (talk) 23:16, 13 April 2016 (CEST)
I did award tickets for Malacca, I just didn't cross it out. Dauth (talk) 23:57, 13 April 2016 (CEST)
Thanks very much to you both for taking the time to look into it. Cragspyder (talk) 04:01, 14 April 2016 (CEST)

Contest history[edit source]

Hello! I saw this in the contest history: and I was thinking you probably somehow reverted points by mistake to an earlier date? 123e55 (talk)

You're right. I managed to make those two edits in the wrong order, so the second overrode the first.
Fixed now. Thanks for pointing it out! Giving you an extra ticket for that. ~ Meneth (talk) 13:40, 14 April 2016 (CEST)

2017 Contest[edit source]

Hello, I made a contribution on the technology page, but it has been more than 72 hours since the contribution and I have not received any tickets. Just wanted to let you know.

Thanks. I've been in transit so have not yet had time to hand out tickets, but plan to do so sometime this evening. ~ Meneth (talk) 16:32, 20 November 2017 (CET)

Usage of Template:Mission_tree on an external wiki and what plugins are needed, if any[edit source]

Hello there. Would it be allowable for a mod's wiki to use Template:Mission_tree and Template:Mpos for their own mod's mission trees, and if so what plugins are required to be installed on the server? 20:39, 29 April 2019 (UTC)

Hi there, Meneth has moved to other projects inside PDX. You may use the templates for your mod, though if you wish you could also host it on this wiki (mod will need to follow common wiki rules). Be advised that you will need ImageMap installed, but IIRC it should be bundled with the latest MW release. Note: to clarify, the permission is only for the templates, I cannot respond on the use of PDX assets outside of the PDX wikis. ~ SolSys (talk) 09:28, 30 April 2019 (UTC)
