The Ulema, the local Islamic clergy, are dismayed at the lack of faith of the new ruler of Timbuktu. Already they are spreading word that he is closer to the pagans than to a true Muslim ruler and that his lack of faith will condemn us all. The ulema are already threatening that unless $MONARCH$ adapts to the requirements of the Islamic faith, they will seek a new ruler who does.

Muhammad Ture is of Soninke origins and started his career in Songhai as the chief minister to Alî Ber Sonni. After the death of Alî Ber and the succession through his son Ko Mamadi Dao, the minister Muhammad challenged the authority of Abu in 1493 and overthrew him after the victorious Battle of Anfao. He took then the throne of Songhai for himself and founded the Askia dynasty, taking the name of Muhammad I. Askia.
His reign was one of great militaristic success and political reforms, which ensured a legacy of learning and literacy for the Songhai people.

Please help with verifying or updating this infobox. It was last verified for version 1.32. |
With the conquest of the very traditional Mossi, [Root.GetName] stands at a religious and social crossroad: the [Root.GetClergyName] demand the eradication of the old traditional beliefs and want to bring the rural people to the light of Allah. The [Root.GetNobilityOrFallbackName] however stress the benefit [Root.GetName] would enjoy if the peasants are left alone with their beliefs, such as lowered risks of peasant uprisings against the [Root.Monarch.GetTitle].
In the end it is up to [Root.Monarch.GetTitle] [Root.Monarch.GetName] to decide the fate of these people and the religious direction of [Root.GetName].

Alî Ber, the great Conqueror
![]() |
Please help with verifying or updating this infobox. It was last verified for version 1.32. |
Alî Sonni was the 15th ruler of the Sonni dynasty and the one who would go down in history as the first proper king of Songhai. During his reign many great cities such as Djenné or Timbuktu fell to Songhai's armies and the kingdom developed into the empire, which shall replace Mali as the hegemon of West Africa. Though he was a Muslim, his repressive policy against the scholars of Timbuktu and his tolerance for the traditional religions made him an outward Muslim at best.

![]() |
Please help with verifying or updating this infobox. It was last verified for version 1.32. |
Prior to [Root.Monarch.GetName]'s ascension to the throne the armies of Songhai were already a force to be reckoned with, but they were never a standing army. With [Root.Monarch.GetName]'s rise to power this changed though as he founded the first standing army for Songhai. During his reign the military received modernization and a focus on stricter training and recruiting, which made the already formidable troops of Songhai a dominant power in the early 16th century.

The Great Mosque of Djenné
![]() |
Please help with verifying or updating this infobox. It was last verified for version 1.32. |
The mosque of Djenné, once the palace of Sultan Kunburu, has seen a lot of collateral damage during the siege and as such it needed a renovation. Due to the efforts of the Songhain workers it was possible to restore the mosque to its former glory except for one detail: the original design of the mosque incorporated many expensive decorations which originated from the times of the building when it was a palace, but these decorations had been destroyed during the war.
The [Root.GetClergyName] argue that a restoration of this decoration is necessary to show our devotion to Allah. However, the [Root.GetDhimmiName] stress out that the churches and temples of other religions do not get the same treatment of decorations and as such the Great Mosque shall be treated as equal.

The Roots of Songhai
![]() |
Please help with verifying or updating this infobox. It was last verified for version 1.32. |
Before the Islamization of West Africa, the people of Songhai used to be all members of the traditional folk religions. It was thought to be impossible for our ruling class to consider this, but our very tolerant stance towards the old ways made them question their status as Muslims. Usually that would be an unforgivable sin, but even [Root.Monarch.GetName] considers returning to the religious roots of Songhai...
