Saluzzo is a CatholicismCatholic monarchy located in northwestern Italy, bordering Flag of Provence Provence and Flag of Savoy Savoy. In 1444, the country starts as a one province minor, and is a member of the HRE.

Missions[edit | edit source]

Main article: Italian minor missions

Saluzzo has a unique mission set of 8 missions. The three region-specific missions focus on embracing the Renaissance, improving the capital (and other provinces, if owned), and accumulating trade power in their home node.

Decisions[edit | edit source]

Since Saluzzo's primary culture Culture icon.png is Piedmontese, Saluzzo has the ability to form Flag of Sardinia-Piedmont Sardinia-Piedmont.

Execute decision.pngForm Italian Nation

As the heart of the Renaissance, our nation is blossoming culturally. We have just entered the beginning of what looks like a prolonged artistic rebellion, especially in the field of architecture and literature. The cultural evolution is not aiding our country in maintaining peace within our borders however. Our country is continuously stricken by foreign states seeking power and territorial gain.

Strategy[edit | edit source]

Strategy The below is one of many player suggested strategies for Saluzzo. Bear in mind, due to the dynamic nature of the game, it may unfold differently for other players.

As an OPM that begins the game on the periphery of the HRE, and is not a vassal of a larger nation (such as Flag of France France), Saluzzo's starting position is precarious to say the least. The upside of their pitiful force projection is that they have no possible rivals, so the player should have their pick of nearby allies after only slightly improving relations. Because expansion into Flag of Savoy Savoy poses a particular challenge, Saluzzo should consider first expanding into Flag of Provence Provence. As Provence touches the Ligurian Sea tile, they are within coring range of Flag of Genoa Genoa, Flag of Lucca Lucca, Flag of Florence Florence, Flag of Siena Siena, or the Flag of Papal States Papal States (through Avignon) - all of whom are convenient initial allies, that will likely join an opportunistic war immediately if promised land. Provence is allied to Flag of France France, which is certainly cause for alarm, but France will frequently be busy warring with Flag of England England, Flag of Burgundy Burgundy, and consolidating their own power - so an opportunity to strike while they are preoccupied should present itself. Nearby Savoy is a tempting foe, but their mountain chokepoints and larger army will require significant backup to deal with. An alliance with Flag of Switzerland Switzerland or Flag of Milan Milan may help, if they are hostile to Savoy. Be wary of Provence, Switzerland, and Milan as foes in an early war - their traditions provide benefits to either land morale or infantry combat ability, making fights with them slightly riskier. Any other foe will be disadvantaged against Saluzzo, especially with a military advisor or decent Saluzzian general. While Saluzzo remains an OPM, they will be extremely vulnerable to nearby regional powers - they will want to move carefully but quickly to acquire more land.

The player should be careful about taking any land that they have not fabricated a claim on, as the Emperor will likely demand it back. An alliance with the Emperor, generally Flag of Austria Austria, should give Saluzzo enough breathing room to deal with larger nations such as Flag of Milan Milan and Flag of Venice Venice. Alternatively, vassalizing HRE members will not prompt the Emperor to demand unlawful territory, and will provide a significant army boost when loyal. A close relationship with the Flag of Papal States Papal States will also make life easier, as excommunication through a hostile Vatican could spell doom for a small nation like Saluzzo. The player should not be afraid to bully the other junior league-ers in your region, provided they have the allies to provide support - Saluzzo's infantry combat bonus gives them a strong early edge in warfare. If possible, they should try to spread their AE out - by pulling Naples into a war if they become independent, or by pushing into the Mediterranean islands - anything to draw Saluzzo's AE away from the hornets' nest that is the Germanic princedoms.

As Saluzzo expands across Italy, it will be important to keep relations high with the surrounding nations. Aggressive expansion is painful in this region of the world, even if a peace deal merely annexes a province or two. Espionage ideas grant a further AE reduction, but beyond that Saluzzo will want to run charm offensives immediately following land annexations. Countries will only join a coalition if 1) they have a negative opinion of the target, and 2) their AE opinion is below -50. Technically, if the player keeps up relations through improve relations, sending gifts, influence nation, being the same religion, etc, they can easily rack up to 100 AE with other countries without them joining a coalition. Recall that AE decays at a rate that is tied to the "improve relation" speed, which diplomatic ideas will improve (+25%) as well as an "improve relations" advisor (+20%), the diplo-humanist policy (+20%), and some random events. The Curia power "Sanction Dynasty" available to Catholic nations grants +10%, as does Protestantism by default. Down the line, forming Italy will give the player access to their massive +50% tradition, which combined with the previous buffs essentially allows them to go to war twice as often as is typical. Remember that fully annexing a nation may add a significant AE penalty in the moment, but down the line means one less country that can join a coalition against you.

Forming Flag of Sardinia-Piedmont Sardinia-Piedmont should be considered as a early/midgame step towards Italy. Their ideas are arguably inferior to Saluzzo's for an aggressive conqueror, boasting weakened AE reduction and CC cost, but gaining an Improve Relations idea (+25%). Their mission tree contains a rare Administrative Efficiency boost, however, which is worth picking up in any circumstance. Be aware that forming Flag of Sardinia-Piedmont Sardinia-Piedmont will pull the player out of the HRE unless they are Emperor or an Elector!

Long term, whether or not the player forms Flag of Sardinia-Piedmont Sardinia-Piedmont, they should seriously consider forming Flag of Italy Italy as soon as possible - they will lose the Saluzzo AE reduction, but largely upgrade all of their other national ideas and gain permanent claims on the Italian region. It is likely that Flag of Venice Venice will be a thorn in their side for much of the early/mid-game, but Italy's powerful galley bonuses should make finally claiming Venezia that much easier.

Saluzzo may have a tense start, but it blossoms into a wildly fun European campaign. It has ready access to some of the best trade nodes in the early game, two powerful potential formable nations (Flag of Sardinia-Piedmont Sardinia-Piedmont and Flag of Italy Italy), a strong and interesting idea set that encourages aggressive play and trade dominance, and a mountainous, defensible capital with its back to the Alps. The steep aggressive expansion and development costs that plague central Europe will hinder them less than most neighboring nations, provided they can find solid footing - which they should, as the Habsburgs crave the humility only a del Vasto can bring.
