Revolution

“Revolution” is a disaster that may occur during the Age of Revolutions. Many countries can become revolutionary. However the first country to do so is designated the
revolution target and gets several bonuses. Other great powers can become the
revolution target later by getting more
revolutionary zeal than the current target. Many events cannot happen, CB's cannot be used etc. if the country is revolutionary.
Before any revolution starts The Birthplace of the Revolution first needs to spawn in a high-development province meeting certain criteria. This Center of Revolution will spread its anti-establishment rhetoric to three random high-absolutism provinces at a time; not necessarily just in the country in which it spawns but to random nearby provinces too. When more than 20% of any country's development has revolutionary ideas present the countdown to the revolutionary disaster can start ticking. To track the progress of the spread of revolutionary ideas one can view a progress bar at the top right of the Government tab (above the list of accepted cultures).
Many countries may become revolutionary, however, only the first great power to become revolutionary can be designated the
revolution target and will remain so unless having their capital sieged down and being crushed by another. However, if conditions allow, a second great power can be designated the revolution target after the first has been crushed (this event can fire even soon after).
When this great power Target of the Revolution is designated, a button will appear - bottom right - similar to that for the HRE, the Catholic Faith, the Empire of China or having a Parliament.

Decades of feudal oppression, religious intolerance and unjust taxation have all contributed to the revolutionary movements beginning to surface across our lands. $MONARCH$ has desperately been seeking resolutions to the ever increasing problems as our country finds itself on the verge of financial ruin. The populations' incessant strive for liberty will probably prove too much of a challenge if not handled properly.

The Revolution has arrived! The [Root.GovernmentName] has collapsed under its own weight as the revolutionary masses stormed key government buildings. [Root.Monarch.GetTitle] [Root.Monarch.GetName] was captured in the chaos, and although it initially seemed that [Root.Monarch.GetSheHe] might be able to negotiate [Root.Monarch.GetHerHis] way out of it with modest concessions, soon the revolutionary leaders saw through [Root.Monarch.GetHerHis] ploy and opted to limit [Root.Monarch.GetHerHis] influence by removing [Root.Monarch.GetHerHis] head. Although [Root.Monarch.GetHerHis] diehard supporters were convinced that the [Root.Monarch.GetTitle] would soon grow another one, this did not happen.
Instead, a purely temporary Committee of Public Safety has been appointed to guide the new Republic through this revolutionary period. Threats abound, however, for monarchs and despots across Europe fear they may be the Revolution's next victim and are already preparing for war against us. On the bright side, liberal forces are looking to us for assistance in their own struggles, so we will be able to gain support in such a manner.

The Revolution has arrived! The mob of the third estate has risen in revolt and stormed the Bastille, overthrowing the ancien régime. [Root.Monarch.GetTitle] [Root.Monarch.GetName] was captured in the chaos, and although it initially seemed that [Root.Monarch.GetSheHe] might be able to negotiate [Root.Monarch.GetHerHis] way out of it with modest concessions, soon the revolutionary leaders saw through [Root.Monarch.GetHerHis] ploy. They decided that [Root.Monarch.GetSheHe] can best assist the Revolution through science, by being the first to try out Dr. Guillotin’s new invention.
With the [Root.Monarch.GetTitle] out of the way, a new revolutionary republic has been installed with such strange notions as inalienable rights for everyone (not just monarchs). Threats abound, however, for monarchs and despots across Europe fear they may be the Revolution's next victim and are already preparing for war against us. On the bright side, liberal forces are looking to us for assistance in their own struggles, so we will be able to gain support in such a manner.

Revolution! The autocratic government has fallen and the [Root.Monarch.GetTitle] justly beheaded at Peter’s Square. It is time to create a new Russia, a Revolutionary Russia!
The new regime takes its leaders from the formerly secret ranks of the Union of Salvation, a cabal of Imperial Army officers who took a stand against oppression and led the uprising against the [Root.Monarch.GetTitle]. Pavel Pestel was the ideological heart of the Union, while Mikhael Lunin and Nikita Muraynov led the charge from the front lines. Sergei Trubetskoy, nominally the leader of the Union, has only recently returned to Russia following ill-health. Each places a bid for leadership of the new Russian state.
The revolutionary state aims to abolish serfdom, establish equality under the law, and redistribute the land of oppressive nobles between the State and the peasantry. With a strong foundation in political liberalism, the revolution carries an unwavering resolve to challenge autocracy throughout the world.

The Revolution has arrived! It began with a coup staged by a group of noblemen - quickly gaining notoriety as the '[GetYear] års män', the 'Men of [GetYear]' - that forced [Root.Monarch.GetTitle] [Root.Monarch.GetName] to abdicate and go into exile. Although the conspirators had aimed to establish a constitutional monarchy, matters quickly escalated as a radical clique of lawyers, businessmen and liberals roused the mob through incendiary speeches inciting popular outrage against the monarch. The Royal Palace in [Root.Capital.GetCapitalName] was stormed, officials only able to look on in terror as one symbol of the old regime after the next was torn apart and a Republic was proclaimed.
A 'Säkerhetstinget' or 'Thing of Public Safety' dominated by the radicals has taken over temporary control of the state. "I lament to see the honor of the [Root.GetStateForm] sunk even to prostitution." For these impertinent words, [Root.Monarch.GetTitle] [Root.Monarch.GetName] had popular politician John Wilkes arrested and imprisoned. However, this sparked large protests in London, where crowds gathered behind the rallying cry of "For Wilkes and Liberty!" Officials read the Riot Act, instructing troops to fire on the protestors, but this served only to further enflame tensions as the crowd continued to swell. Protests soon rose up across the city and a large mob stormed the Tower of London, freeing all political prisoners. Led by Wilkes himself, the crowd then turned towards Buckingham Palace. The [Root.Monarch.GetTitle] was captured as [Root.Monarch.GetSheHe] attempted to flee the city and now faces trial for conspiracy against the [Root.GetAdjective] people, the verdict a foregone conclusion.

Not satisfied with being merely First Consul, Napoleone di Buonaparte is proposing that he be crowned Emperor of Italy. He justifies this by claiming that restoring the hereditary succession would make it harder to restore the antico regime of Italy to power - after all, there have been several royalist plots on his life - but there is little doubt that his prime motivation is to further his own ambitions for supreme power. The proposal has met with widespread support among the populace, who yearn for the relative stability of the pre-revolutionary years; however, diehard supporters of the Revolution express worry at this attempt to concentrate even more power in Napoleone's hands.

Starting the Revolution[edit | edit source]
![]() |
Please help with verifying or updating this section. It was last verified for version 1.33. |
With Emperor, once the Age of Revolutions begins, you will have to wait for a Center of Revolution to spawn (usually 50 years or so after the Age has begun). The country that gets the center of revolution must be a great power with
Enlightenment embraced, and the province must have at least
30 development and have Enlightenment present. (Without Emperor, there is no center of revolution; to start the Revolution disaster, a country must have its capital in Europe and have at least 30 provinces.)
It tends to spawn in the country with the most absolutism, so it will most likely spawn inside the player's country or in one of the great powers. Once the center has spawned it will start converting provinces near it, three at a time. It will generally target provinces of countries with high absolutism first and increase revolution progress by 1% per day, per province. Because of this, the center will convert one province every 33 days on average. Once the revolution is present, the province's
unrest is increased to quarter of the absolutism of the country which owns it. So, for example, a province owned by a country which has
100 absolutism will have
+25 unrest.
To trigger the Revolution disaster, one must wait till 20% of your development has revolution present, and it will appear on the government tab. The easiest way to trigger it is by tanking your prestige below 0. Then you can speed up the monthly growth by having 25 loans,
5 war exhaustion, negative
stability, and negative prestige.
Once the disaster fires you can choose to crush the revolution, or embrace it. Either option will spawn rebels that one needs to destroy and drops your stability to −3. Once you have +3 stability, no active rebel and rebel occupied provinces, the disaster will be resolved.
Crushing the Revolution[edit | edit source]
To remove Revolution present on your provinces, one must resolve the Revolution Disaster and have crushed the Revolutionary Rebels, or wait till the Revolution mechanic is disabled.
Once the disaster is over and Revolutionary rebels are crushed, the Center of Revolution you own will be destroyed, Revolution present will be removed, and Autonomy in your provinces will go back to normal. However, if another nation close by still has the Center of Revolution, the Center will still continue to spread the Revolution onto your provinces.
To remove the Center of Revolution owned by another nation, it must be owned by a Revolution Target, and you must use the Crush the Revolution CB on the Revolution Target and enforce Crush the Revolution in the peace deal. Revolution Target is granted to any Great Power that has turned Revolutionary if there isn't one already.
To disable the Revolution mechanic, you're required to wait 30 years if there's been no Target of Revolution, or it's been 20 years since the last Revolution Target was crushed and there's currently no Revolution Target.
If you're the Papal State, you can not trigger the Revolution disaster.
Additionally, if you attempt to end the disaster by boosting to +3 stability before clicking an option during the triggered event, the resolution event will be bugged. However, after selecting the revolution option (whether to accept it or reject it) and killing off any rebels nationwide the disaster can be ended instantly by boosting to
+3 stability.
Becoming revolutionary[edit | edit source]
Being first to embrace the revolution as a great power, willingly or not, will change the government to Revolutionary Republic and turn the country into the Revolution Target. With Emperor, non-great powers, and anyone who is not first to succumb to the revolution, will become a Revolutionary State instead (and will not become the revolution target). Without Emperor, only the revolution target can be revolutionary.
It is advised that you save up military power to Strengthen Government before triggering the disaster as becoming revolutionary will start you out with
50 republican tradition.

Being the revolution target grants the following static bonuses:

Being revolutionary unlocks the ‘Spread the Revolution’ casus belli (also disabling most other CBs, including Imperialism) against any country which is not yet a revolutionary state, which reduces warscore acquisition cost by 50% and reduces diplomatic acquisition cost to 0 for all provinces. However, note that since this CB does not apply to your attacking other revolutionary states any such land acquisitions will be costly in diplomatic points.
Being a revolutionary republic (or revolutionary state, if you're not the revolution target) allows you to pass the ‘Cult of Reason’ decision which will decrease technology cost by 15% for an average of 12 months. This decision can be used to spike up your technology, especially if stacked with neighbor bonuses, diplomatic investments modifier and abolish slavery modifier. If done properly, you can propel your diplomatic technology forward by 10 years or more. Therefore, if you are planning to go revolutionary, you can feel free to invest your diplomatic points into development or culture conversion. However you need to be at stability −2 to be eligible to pass the decision. Remember that boosting stability is significantly more costly as a republic. Likewise, keep in mind that the 12-months MTTH event that removes the cult of reason modifier gives 1 stability when assessing whether or not a disaster might trigger.
The revolution target additionally cannot be the defender of the faith of any religion.

Revolutionary flags replace a country's regular flag when they are the revolution target.
They are always tricolors, and the coloring for each nation is decided by the revolutionary_colors
defined in their countries\xxx.txt
file. If a country does not have any defined, then they will be randomly chosen.
This is a list of nations with specified revolutionary flags.
