In 1540 Pope Paulus III recognized the Jesuite Order, created 1534 by the Spaniard Don Iñigo López de Recalade, better know as Ignatius of Loyola. He becomes one of the most devoted counter reformists and enemy number one of the Protestant movement. Loyola having a soldier background makes its mark on the order, which is organized almost as an army. High priority was given both to educating missionaries but also counselors for European royal courts. This made the Jesuite order very powerful in the politic scene. 1773 the Jesuite order was dissolved by Pope Pius VI due to pressure from Christian countries in the age of enlightenment. 1814 the Jesuite order was reinstituted, however, just as a faint shadow of the powerful order it once had been.

The Reformation of the Catholic Faith
![]() |
Please help with verifying or updating this infobox. It was last verified for version 1.30. |
The successes of the Protestant movement can no longer go unchallenged. His Holiness has tasked a commission of cardinals with addressing the challenges posed by it - while the Catholic faith itself must not be compromised, His Holiness and most cardinals are willing to admit that some Protestant complaints are valid. For instance, there can be no dispute that the frequent absenteeism of bishops and the worldly excesses of the clergy are a stain on the Church's reputation.
Therefore, a Council will be convened in Trent to discuss how best to reform the Church to meet the challenge of the reformers and begin the process of Counter-Reformation.

The Pope has invited us to attend the Council of Trent to debate the required reforms to remedy the corruption and other afflictions of the church. The Council will discuss what constitutes the Protestant heresy and consider the definition of Church teachings in the areas of Scripture and Tradition, Original Sin, Justification, Sacraments, the Eucharist in Holy Mass and the veneration of saints. It will also try to answer Protestant disputes by considering curbs on practices that have become a stain on the Church's reputation, for instance the frequent absenteeism of bishops and various worldly excesses of the clergy.

White smoke emerges from the roof of the Sistine Chapel. Amid accusations of simony, the Conclave has elected Rodrigo Borgia, Archbishop of Valencia, to the Throne of Saint Peter. The Borgias are a relatively recent arrival to the theatre of Roman politics, and have gained the ire of the more established Roman families who coveted the position for themselves.
Though many of the rumours surrounding this Borgia Pope are likely to be exaggerations propagated by his enemies, he is known to openly keep a mistress and has already elevated his teenage son Cesare to the rank of Cardinal. Speculation abounds that the reign of this Pope will be fraught with scandal and corruption.

[From.Monarch.GetTitle] [From.Monarch.GetName] is asking the [Root.Monarch.GetTitle] for advice about the recent witch hunts and trials. The people of $FROMCOUNTRY$ are blaming the famines, diseases and other unfortunate events on sorcery and witchcraft. The sufferings have led to women, children and men being accused of worshipping the Devil and being a threat to Christendom. Should they be banned, these witch hunts and trials, or should the people be allowed to hunt, pursue, lay blame and punish people that might be innocent or not of witchcraft?

After asking [From.Monarch.GetTitle] [From.Monarch.GetName] for advice on the whole witch situation, about whether or not we should continue with our witch hunts and trials, we waited long for the answer. It finally arrived, with the [From.Monarch.GetTitle] signature at the end of the official document. 'Cease with the witch hunts and trials immediately!'

The message from the [From.Monarch.GetTitle] was very clear, sorcery and witchcraft should be pursued, the accused ones tried and the guilty ones punished for their sinful deeds. All who worship the Devil, attend witches' Sabbaths and threaten Christendom will burn in Hell!

Lucrezia Borgia

Some women has only held worth in their families eyes because they could be married to wealthy and influential men, often many years their senior, to forge alliances, gain influence and founding in different matters. So was the case with Lucrezia Borgia, whose father Pope Alexander VI married her to three different men during her life to gain powerful alliances and founding. Her first husband was Giovanni Sforza, Lord of of Pesaro and titled Count of Catignola. He was offered Lucrezia's dowry in return for invalidating the marriage, the Pope claiming that it had not been consummated and should thus be dissolved. The Borgia family had grown so powerful that they no longer needed the Sforzas, and instead sought better alliances. Giovanni first refused, accusing Lucrezia of paternal and fraternal incest, but with the pressure from the rest of the Sforza family he finally agreed to sign confessions of impotence and documents of annulment before witnesses. Alfonso of Aragon married Lucrezia Borgia after the annulment, but the short marriage ended when he was murdered, supposedly by Lucrezia's brother Cesare. Lucrezia was appointed governor of Spoleto not long before her husband's death, and they had a child named Rodrigo of Aragon. Her third and last husband was Alfonso I d'Este, Duke of Ferrara. Lucrezia's reputation has taken a hit, with her many different marriages, murdered husband, annulment and the stain that her father and brother had brought upon her. Hopefully, with her marriage to the Duke, she can be known as a respectable and accomplished Renaissance duchess.

Releasing the Papal States[edit | edit source]
A Catholic country other than the Papal States may choose to give it up to the Pope, or release the Papal State in another Catholic province if it doesn't exist.

The deep devotion of the Roman Catholics in Rome has awakened a desire for an independent state ruled by Popes of the Church. A large part of the population has expressed support for the idea of such an establishment and has now turned to $MONARCH$ for approval.

It truly saddens us to see that the dominions of the Pope have all but disappeared. Our strong devotion makes us the ideal candidate responsible for establishing a new Papal State. Perhaps we should cede a province of ours?
