Lotharingia is a formable nation in Europe, which can be formed by Burgundy or
Lorraine
Formation[edit | edit source]
To form Lotharingia, the player must complete the mission ‘The Crown of Lothair’. This requires that the player first navigate the Burgundian Succession Crisis and join the HRE. Burgundy players without the Emperor expansion and Lorraine players form Lotharingia via a decision with the same prerequisites instead.

Most Lotharingian missions are shared with Burgundy with a few additional missions for conquering former Carolingian territories.
Strategy[edit | edit source]

Starting as Burgundy with the sole goal of forming Lotharingia. Start by allying the Emperor, Austria. Find a way to undermine France. Using his rivals against him or supporting vassal independence are good ways of doing this. The main reason to undermine France is because France protects Provence and we need the Lorraine Area. After securing Lorraine and you'll want to keep busy bullying France until the Inheritance fires. You can also attempt to go for Calais, but it may not be worth it if Portugal is backing England. There will be opportunities later to engage England. Manage AE well and focus on your goal of Lotharingia! You'll have an easier time forming Lotharingia if you accept French leadership and inherit the Lowlands during the Burgundian Inheritance event (Alternatively: Remain independent, and enact the Great Priviledge. If you are allied to the Emperor, the AI will usually accept the outcome and you'll inherit the lowlands, become a HRE member AND stay independent, all at the cost of a min-50-autonomy privilege that can be cancelled 20 years later). Immediately get support for independence and fight! If you've undermined them appropriately, this will be VERY easy. Once free again, 5 years will pass before the Emperor will consider allowing Burgundy to enter the Empire. If Austria supported your independence and you have good enough relations, they will accept you into the Empire. From there you can simply eat Burgundy's claims until you reach enough provinces in the correct areas to form Lotharingia. Hello wonderful new ideas and even more claims! If for some reason the Emperor doesn't allow you to join the empire, you get CBs on all of the electors to vassalize or restore union over them. You'll need to subjugate enough of them to gain Emperor for Burgundy and then conquest for the necessary provinces OR simply fight the Emperor and all his allies each time you want to take a province. However, demand for unlawful territory may make this tactic unfeasible as AE and negative opinion compile quickly.
Surely with proper planning and ability in-game Lotharingia is formable around 1500-1520. You must focus once in the HRE due to the wild Aggressive Expansion you will experience. Trading off wars between France and German minors taking very small amounts of land worked well. Perhaps taking Pale in a war with England would net the player a place to expand without suffering too much AE.
