Libertatia is a pirate republic in Madagascar. It does not exist in historical starts and is only formed by event.
Formation[edit | edit source]
All African countries that own their core province Maroantsetra (4024) can get - as soon as the Europeans have colonies in Africa and India or East Indies - the event to play as or release Libertatia as a march.

An unlikely alliance between the pirate captains Misson and Tew, as well as the Dominican priest Caraccioli, have united the pirates of Madagascar into a single community. Naming their colony ‘Libertatia’, the pirates appear to follow a utopian doctrine of radical liberty and communalism. The pirates consider slavery and statecraft to be anathema to their ideals. They govern through majority voting and bolster their ranks by recruiting liberated slaves from Angola.
While this ragtag republic will surely draw the ire of the European colonial powers, whose merchant vessels they mark as prey, this unruly crew of idealists may thrive under our protection.

Strategy[edit | edit source]

General plan to play as Libertatia[edit | edit source]
- Start with an European country (Portugal and Castile are good choices. Ottomans are also good).
- Have a province in the Caribbeans (needed for step 7)
- Get a province in the Kongo region (event requirement)
- Reach Madagascar
- Have one province beyond the Zanzibar trade node, for example Coromandel. This is needed to fulfill the condition of having a treasure fleet pass by the Zanzibar node.
- Annex whoever owns Maroantsetra (usually Betsimisaraka).
- Trigger the Age of Piracy. Sending all your light ships to privateer the Caribbean should do it. You need 25% of the trade power of the Caribbean node being controlled by pirates.
- Bring down your country (optional, but it makes life easier later)
- Release Betsimisaraka and play as it.
- Create light ships as soon as you can and set them to privateer the Zanzibar node. The event should trigger soon. Don't accept yet.
- When the event triggers, declare independence from your overlord and then accept the switch to Libertatia.
- Have fun, Matey. (This can be done by 1480 or earlier, but you might want to drag it all the way to the 1500 for colonialism).
Suggestions and Pitfalls[edit | edit source]
- You do not need to expand with your original country. Just save money to buy a province in Madagascar.
- To save money, I recommend dismantling your forts, disbanding your ships (except light ships) and disbanding your cavalry. Set the army maintenance to minimum. Hire lvl 1 advisors.
- Never buy the Maroantsetra province: it removes the core of the original owner, meaning that it won't be released with Betsimisaraka (step 7), ruining the run.
- You can buy your way to Madagascar or simply colonize.
- You do not inherit most things from your first nation. But you do keep the maps and the government reform progress.
- It pays to hold on to Maroantsetra a little longer. Developing and building will make your life easier. Remember to give it institutions as well.
- You will keep inflation, corruption and stability of your previous country so don't ruin it
- Whether you want to wait for Colonization to spawn or not is up to you. Both approaches have their own merit.
Portugal vs Castile[edit | edit source]
These two nations are quite good at the job, being early colonizers. Portugal seems to be faster than Castile, but Castile is more forgiving and can be easily demolished (step 6). Simply release the nations as vassals and feed them all your provinces and they will not bother you again. With Portugal, you don't have a vassal to release (but you can get one if you want). With Portugal, I would simply colonize my way to Madagascar. Castile can get a lot of money, but the colonists are not as fast as Portugal's, so I would buy my way to Madagascar.
Ottomans[edit | edit source]
Because of its position, its sheer power and amount of freebies the Ottomans get, they are also a good candidate to trigger Libertatia. Just conquer your way to Madagascar while pushing for a colony in the Caribbeans.
