Island

To define a province as or on an island, three terms are used in the game. Each definition also includes the provinces from the previous definition.

Overview[edit]

For all three island definitions a province must not be part of the one of the big continental landmasses Eurasia, Africa, America, Australia or Greenland[1]. If a province is allowed to be connected via a strait crossing or if it can have a land border depends on the island definition which is shown in the following table:

Definition Game code Strait crossing is allowed Land border is allowed Impact on the game
Province is an island is_island = yes No No Can't spawn Institutions nor Centers of reformation and disables an option in the event Blockade

Province is an island [edit]

By this definition[2] a province is an island if it doesn't have any land border with another province (not even a strait or a border with wasteland). This definition is for example used for the spawning conditions of institutions. By this definition Cyprus and Mann are islands while London (borders another province), Venice (has a strait connection to the mainland) and Gran Canaria (has a strait connection to another islands) are not.

Province is an island (second definition) [edit]

By this definition[3] a province is an island if it doesn't have any land border with another province (not even a border with wasteland). In contrast to the first definition a strait crossing to another province is allowed. This definition is only used once in the game to decide if a colony can get slaves as a trade good.

Province is on an island [edit]

By this definition[4] a province is on an island if it doesn't belong to the mainland of Europasia, Africa, Australia, America or Greenland[1]. Provinces that are only connected by strait crossing to these landmasses count as island by this definition. This third definition is for example use for the “Empire of Mann” achievement or to “Hoist the Black Flag”. For example London, Venice, Gran Canaria and the provinces on Sumatra are on islands by this definition even though they are not islands by the first definition.
