Gaeldom is a nation in Europe, located in northern Britain. It does not exist in the 1444 start date - its cores are owned by Flag of Scotland Scotland. It serves as one of two nations of Highlander culture, alongside Flag of The Isles The Isles, and is also the primary nation of Highlander culture.

In the event Flag of Scotland Scotland is destroyed, Gaeldom can choose to reform it: Scotland can be re-formed by any country with Scottish or Highlander culture if it should cease to exist.

  • gets a permanent claim on every province in the Lowlands, the Highlands, and the Isles that it does not already own.
  • gets the modifier “Increased Centralization” for 20 years with the following effects:
    • Autonomy.png−0.05 monthly autonomy change,
    • National unrest.png+1 national unrest.
  • moves its capital to Edinburgh (251).

If the country:

  • is a member of the Holy Roman Empire and not an elector
    • then all its provinces are removed from the HRE.
  • is a Duchy rank duchy
    • then it becomes a Kingdom rank kingdom.
  • does not have custom ideas

Additionally, Gaeldom can form Flag of Great Britain Great Britain militarily, but not diplomatically (the diplomatic event is limited to Flag of England England and Flag of Scotland Scotland).

  • becomes the new capital of the owner country.

  • AI gives "high priority" (400) to this decision

Strategy[edit | edit source]

Gaeldom is played much like other vassal or personal union starts. The player should begin by seeking support for their independence from Scotland's rivals. Most likely Flag of England England will rival Scotland and so independence support can be obtained from them, although support from England will need to be secured before the surrender of Maine, for two key reasons:

  • England will not support Gaeldom's independence while at war.
  • Flag of France France starts guaranteeing the independence of Scotland, so England's navy will assist in keeping the French from landing their forces to aid the Scots.

The player will need to remember to mark Scotland's provinces as provinces of interest, else England will want them in the peace treaty. After the war Gaeldom will need to break its alliance with England, so improving relations with England's rivals is a good idea, as is rivalling England (and Scotland, if it still exists).

After that, a Gaeldom run is basically the same as a Scottish run.
