Burgundian Succession Crisis[edit]

Before the year 1500, if an AI controlled Burgundy borders France, is not the Holy Roman Emperor, and the Emperor (if they exist) is not at war with France on opposing sides, there is a chance that the country will have its lands divided between France and another country, which can be the emperor of the Holy Roman Empire, a country that has a royal marriage with Burgundy, Spain or Castile. The country that inherits the lands in the Holy Roman Empire will then be given the option to cede those lands to other existing countries that consider the lands their own.

There are two events that can start the crisis. The first ("Duke of Burgundy Dies") is possible if Burgundy is at war and is a monarchy with a male ruler. In this case the crisis is more likely to happen if

  • Burgundy has no heir
  • Burgundy's ruler is a general
  • Burgundy's heir is a general
  • Warscore is negative, less than −25%, less than −50%, and/or less than −75%

The other event ("Fate of Burgundy") is possible if they are not at war and have no heir, in which case it's more likely to happen if

  • Burgundy's Icon stability.png stability is negative
  • Burgundy's ruling dynasty is de Bourgogne

In either case, it is less likely to happen if Burgundy is a lucky nation. It can't happen at all if Burgundy has ever been controlled by a player. (As a major event, all players that know about Burgundy see it.)

The eligibility criteria are as follows:

  1. The Holy Roman Emperor is eligible to inherit if that country has at least 4 non-colony provinces.
  2. Flag of Spain Spain, or, if Spain does not exist, Flag of Castile Castile, is eligible if they have 6 or more non-colony provinces.
  3. Any country except Flag of France France that is a member of the HRE, plus Spain or (if they don't exist) Castile, is eligible if they have a royal marriage with Burgundy and 4 or more non-colony provinces. Spain/Castile and the Emperor may be eligible under this criterion separately from the others.

Once eligible countries have been determined, one of these three groups is chosen to inherit. If more than one is eligible, in case of Duke of Burgundy Dies, the probabilities of being chosen for inheritance are as follows:

Marriage? Emperor? Spain? Marriage chance Emperor chance Spain chance
Yes Yes Yes 70% 15% 15%
Yes No Yes 70% 30%
No Yes Yes 50% 50%
Yes Yes No 70% 30%

In case of Fate of Burgundy, the probabilities of being chosen for inheritance are as follows:

Marriage? Emperor? Spain? Marriage chance Emperor chance Spain chance
Yes Yes Yes 60% 20% 20%
Yes No Yes 65% 35%
No Yes Yes 70% 30%
Yes Yes No 70% 30%

If marriage partners are chosen to inherit, then if the Emperor was one of them, they are chosen if they have at least 8 non-colony provinces. Otherwise, a random eligible country is chosen.

If nobody is eligible to inherit, Burgundy retains its independence.

The crisis then proceeds as follows:

  1. The ruler of Burgundy dies, and the heir if male. A new regency also starts.
  2. France can choose to take all non-HRE land owned by Burgundy or its subjects that either is in the France region (except Cambray), is Rethel, or has culture in French group. These provinces gain local autonomy. They will also sign a white peace with Burgundy if they were at war. (AI will always take the land.)
    • Alternatively, France can decline them for the cost of some prestige.
  3. Whoever was semi-randomly chosen to inherit gets one of three events, depending on which category they were in, but they are identical except for flavor text. If they so choose, first they will sign a white peace with Burgundy if they were at war. Then Burgundy annexes all its AI-controlled subjects whose capital is in France, has Dutch, Flemish or French culture, or is in the HRE, then cedes all its provinces to the inheritor country, complete with cores. Those provinces also gain 10% local autonomy. (AI will always take the land.)
    • Alternatively, they can decline the land for the cost of 10 prestige; in this case, Burgundy retains its independence. Spain/Castile however can't decline if France accepted its provinces.
  4. If Burgundy retained its independence, it gets the event "Mary Takes Control of the Duchy". This gives a choice between giving French, Dutch, Flemish and imperial subjects a lot of liberty desire (AI will always do this), or releasing them and becoming a republic.
  5. Any member of the HRE that inherited provinces that weren't their own cores at the time, but are cores of some other HRE member other than Burgundy, may then choose to return them (losing the newly gained cores). (AI will always do this.)
    • Alternatively, they may decline at the cost of some prestige. If the Emperor does this, they also lose 20 imperial authority.

Succession crisis events[edit]

Msg event.pngRuler of Burgundy Dies

The great ruler and his closest followers have tragically been killed! In an effort to win the current war, the ruler personally led his troops into battle, valiantly charging his enemies. His naked and disfigured body was later found in a ditch, his head having been cleft in two.

The death of the last ruler of Burgundy has plunged the country into internal turmoil and left it vulnerable to intervention from powerful neighbors.

The death of the last Duke of Burgundy has made the future of the country uncertain. Neighboring countries and those connected by royal marriages are already circling the opportunity to intervene. There is even talk about the Emperor wanting to incorporate the remains into his lands.

However, no matter how great the Duke of Burgundy's power grew, there was never any dispute that the Duchy of Burgundy itself laid under France's salic law. If we act now, no other country will be able to take it by any claim of marriage.

The death of the last Duke of Burgundy has made the future of the country very uncertain. Neighboring countries and those connected by royal marriages are already circling the opportunity to intervene and France has already claimed those parts belonging to the French Region.

As parts of the Burgundian lands lie within the Holy Roman Empire, perhaps we should claim those parts as our legal rights?

Following the death of the male line of Burgundy, the Duchy itself passed back to the French king. The Kingdom of Burgundy itself had no such restrictions on its inheritance law however, and Mary of Burgundy, first dismissed by her grandfather as "only a girl," came to rule the remaining Burgundian lands.

Not only would she have to contend with the powerful neighbors of a now diminished Kingdom, but she also had to negotiate the politics of the provinces of the Netherlands. Seeking independence, these states challenged Mary's authority at every turn. She would finally subdue their challenges by issuing the Great Privilege, ensuring their interests were protected.

Msg event.pngDutch Nobility demands General Estates

In 1566 the Dutch Nobles courted the Burgundian regent in Brussels in an effort to stop the persecution of the Inquisition and to let the General Estates convene, but all they got was a contemptuous refusal. One of the effects of the insulting denial was that the citizenry of Antwerpen stormed the churches and destroyed the relics and paintings. The rebellion then spread from town to town. William of Orange tried to stop these senseless acts of violence, but it was futile. The grass had caught fire...

Msg event.pngThe Count of Charolais and the Edict of Blood

In 1567 the Count of Charolais arrived in the Netherlands, bringing Burgundian Elite troops and determined to break the Dutch Insurrection once and for all. The Count of Charolais issued the Edict of Blood, which allowed him to create a harsh military dictatorship with mass-arrests and courts of honor as a daily routine. The Terror of the Inquisition was intensified and hundreds of people executed. In 1568 the Count of Charolais arrested and executed Count Horn and Egmont, making William of Orange the only leader left to take up the flag. In 1570 the Count of Charolais by himself introduced a 10 percent tax even as the Dutch had just paid a two-year tax that the General estates had agreed upon on the promise of no more extra taxes. A General Strike spread in the Netherlands... In 1573 it was clear that the 'General of the League' had failed to subjugate the Dutch.

Msg event.pngThe Count of Maçon and the Union of Arras

In 1578 the Count of Maçon, member of the powerful Charolais family, arrives in the Netherlands. The Count of Maçon has good character and is efficient, as well as being both a good general and politician. In him William of Orange gets a powerful opponent. The Count of Maçon quickly understands that Burgundy can keep its mastery of the Netherlands only if it plays on the desires of the Catholic provinces. In 1579 Burgundy manages to get some of the southern Catholic provinces into the Union of Arras, which makes peace with Burgundy. However, some of the Northern provinces now create the Union of Utrecht - the first sign of a new Dutch nation. Later on, the Count of Maçon uses the Union of Arras as a safe base for an invasion of the North and the northerners are only saved by the murder-attempt on the Count of Maçon's two elder brothers in 1588, forcing him to leave for Burgundy immediately.
